After the rise of civilization, African Americans received certain rights in the United States. They now had their rights for education, politics and equality in living standards the whites already held. However, whites could not accept the fact that African Americans gained equal rights as themselves. They believed they were too well to be equalized with blacks who have been slaves. The white community became offended and so even though the blacks were given the same rights, they made sure it would not be practiced.
They used their positions and power and started to segregate black people. Africans wanted to solve these problems that were particularly racist. There were lots of leaders who attempted to solve these problems. W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington are two among these leaders during the late 19th and 20th centuries. They dedicated their lives to improve the African Americans’ life, but each by their own ideas of the key to fixing the issues. Booker T. Washington was born as a sslave. He believed that blacks needed to learn more on working skills than education.
In his Atlanta Exposition Speech, which exposed many Booker T. Washington ideas, he talked about building their life by accomplishing and raising life by themselves. This seems very independent. He said that blacks accepted the fact that they have a different skin color and were being segregated and so we should work harder so whites might finally consider them as their own citizens. According to his autobiography “Up from slave” he established Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where he taught useful skills such as, industrial and farming skills.
Additionally through his speech, he asked white people to help African Americans to have engineering skills and farming skills. Therefore, he attributed a lot for raising economic standards of African Americans. W. E. B. Dubois was born as a free man. His belief was that African Americans had to be economically independent from whites and have equal justice as well. He said “the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line. ” He put in effort to solve the problem between whites and blacks.
He believed that education was what would help the African Americans to raise their equality. As he said, he had done a lot of study, research, and writing in colleges and other places. He was the first black to have his masters from Harvard University. He was the one who worked for “the right to vote,” “civic equality,” and “the education of youth according to ability”. For example, he led the Atlanta Conference where people meet annually and do research about the living conditions of African Americans.
He was part of NAACP(National Association for the Advancment Colored People) which derived from Niagara movement that fought for social justice and racism through magazines. I give credit to both Booker T. Washington and W. E. B Dubois. I believed two different ideas are adequate to African Americans but in different situation. African Americans, who do not have economic support, need money immediately for reason such as supporting family. So They would choose to learn technical skill or agriculture skill which they can learn in short time and start to make money.
For example, when the time Booker T Washington and W. E. B Dubis worked, living standards of black people were extremely deprived so they needed finance. So the support of Booker T. Washington was really helpful for living Otherwise, African Americans who could be supported enough financially, they should go to school. In school, they would be educated to solve for problem and struggling which African American had been through. Also they could exposed the great idea to the people who enrolled in college.
I would say if Washington was solved immediate problem, W. E. B Dubis looked more future and prepared it because He tried to give the same opportunity to African Americans that what white people had such as vote, politic, and public facilities. To approach to those problem, African American needed education. Both Booker T Washington and W. E. B Dubis were great leader who help pure heart and compassion towards African American. Throughout their contribution and also other great leader, Now African American could have better life.
