2.2 INFORMATION PHASE: Following are the steps to be carried out in the information phase. 2.3 FUNCTION ANALYSIS: Following are the steps to be carried out in the function phase. Team defines the functions of the item under study Classify the functions in to either primary or secondary function Evaluate the functional relationships Go for function-cost analysis for each function When the analysis is complete, the necessary and un-necessary functions will be visible.

2.4 CREATION PHASE (OR SPECULATION PHASE): Following are the steps to be carried out in the creation phase. To formulate alternative ways for accomplishing the functions Blast ideas, create ideas and then refine ideas Provides functions at lowest possible cost Greater number of ideas, more likely lead to better value Creative problem solving techniques are used which are listed below: i) Brainstorming ii) The Gordon technique iii) The check listing technique iv) The morphological analysis v) Word association technique vi) Round robin vii) Jag’s approach

The ideas generated are judged, refined and combined to determine how each of these ideas can be utilized to accomplish the needed function Alternatives have to be developed without reducing quality, reduce the costs Techniques used in this phase are listed below: i) Fishbone diagram ii) Why-why analysis iii) How-how analysis

2.6 DEVELOPMENT PHASE: Following are the steps to be carried out in the development phase. Evaluated alternatives being developed to refine them from semi-finished state to finished state which are workable solutions to the problem Technical, commercial and commercial feasibilities Technical problems are reviewed All modern manufacturing processes and materials are reviewed Quality, reliability and cost calculations are re-checked Recommended changes are documented Designs, drawings, sketches, part list and bill of material are prepared If required, prototypes are developed and tested

2.7 RECOMMENDATION PHASE: Following are the steps to be carried out in the recommendation phase.
