Toyota is one of the leading automakers in the United States and the world. In 2010, Toyota was forced to recall millions of vehicles after several incidents involving the braking system floor mats and acceleration pedals. This was the cause to stop production of some of its most popular models. With the large recall of these vehicles caused a huge drop in sales, this in turn dropped Toyota as one of the leaders in the automotive industry.
The problem is that Toyota was not able to handle the crisis that was facing them; it was improper crisis management that led to their downfall in sales at that time. It took Toyota many years to gain the trust of its customers and it only took less than nine months for it to lose the trust of its customers and any future customers.
One of the main factors is the importance of knowing your suppliers and the quality that the parts they produce. There must be a supply chain management, to insure quality parts for its vehicles and quality inspection of these parts. Toyota was using an unknown for its parts and not knowing the manufacturing of these parts was one of Toyotas fatal mistakes.
Also the scoop needs to involve that Toyota needs to improve its operational efficiency and quality of its vehicles, this will gain confidence of its customer base. Toyota also needs to share the information on how they are solving the problem and how they are maintain its quality of their cars. Toyota also needs to set goals for their current suppliers of their manufacturing process of their parts for Toyota.
Also set up some type of management system to rate its suppliers performance and quality of parts. The parties involved are first its management’s staff as well as their stake holders, which were affected with the inadequate quality of parts that were being supplied by outside of Japan. This intel affected its customer base by the quality of Toyotas vehicles.
The problem with the priority level was their ability to react to the crises in a timely manner. Toyotas priority level was low until the sales started to be affected. Then once that happened, its priority level was high, because it’s affected its stockholders and the loss of its customer base. If Toyota established a high sense of urgency at the beginning of the recalls, than the end factor would not of happened.
The overall impact of the was the loss of sales in removing its self from its tradition and philosophy of doing business. The engaging of the third party manufactory of its parts allowed Toyota to fall in its quality of its vehicles. Toyotas needs to improve in its communication process and how it interacts internally as well as externally. By providing its customers with a visual on how they are correcting the problem and how well they stand up to industry safety regulations and safety for their customers.
Toyota needs to build a relationship with their suppliers and how they manufacture their parts, and be more selective with their suppliers; the cost of not improvement will result in more lawsuits and well a lead to bankruptcy. The recalls even led Toyota to halt sales and production of eight of its most popular models. FAILURE IN CRISIS MANAGEMENT:In April 2010, Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) agreed to pay a whopping US$16.4million fine imposed on it by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)in the US The fine related to sticky accelerator pedal defects in its vehicles, which resulted inthe company recalling approximately 2.3 million vehicles in the US in late January 2010. According to industry observers, the fine was the largest civil penalty ever levied on an automaker by the NHTSA. Regulators said that Toyota had been penalized as it had failed to notify the NHTSA for at least four months after learning about the problems in its vehicles.
As per US federal law, automakers were required to disclose defects within five business days. However, Toyota refuted the allegations that it had violated safety regulations and maintained that it had agreed to pay the fine in order to avoid a dispute. PR AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES:
