Sam Walton was born i 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. In 1942 when he was 24 he joined the military at 1943 he married Helen Robson. In 1945 his military service ended afterward his wife and him moved to Iowa, then to Newport and finally Arkansas. Sam had already experienced in retail in 1950, the Walton's left newton for Bentonville where they open their first first store which was called 5& 10 on the downtown square. During 1962 Sam Walton open his first Wal-Mart in Rogers, Arkansas. This happened when grocery stores were becoming popular and Mr. Walton wanted to take advantage of the opportunity so he decided to follow Kmart and Target.
Today Walmart has over 8,500 stores in 55 different countries having more than 1.4 million employees. Walmart has built its empire of being a store who offers everything from a vision store, pharmacies, haircuts, groceries, crafts, clothing, electronics, house wares, and gas station not only that Walmart also became partners with McDonald s. Walmart s organizational structure contains of a divisional structure, this structure has three different categories which are product structure, market structure, and geographic structure.
Apparently Walmart's organizational structure has been working for the reason that it continues to grow. It is clear only by the results of the amount of revenue generated each year, their marketing strategy and the amount of new stores they open yearly. Walmart vs. Target & Kmart
Walt mart structure contains a board of directors and lower directors as senior management. This kind of structure is vertical. The board of directors consists of 17 members, including the chairman Rob Walton. Target is another store that also has vertical structure having 12 board of directors. In the other hand Kmart is on a smaller level owed to recent financial and restructuring of their organization. Target
Target is also a discount store, Target is more focused on the style. Target's corporate strategy changed insignificantly over the years to provide high-quality, fashionable designed items along with fundamentals for life that are displayed in a organized, neat, welcoming environment. Kmart's first store was open in Michigan in 1962, Kmart was also known to be a low price store. In 1976, Kmart made history by opening 271 warehouse in one year this is an example of rising too fast. The changes that Kmart has done through the years have made a positive impact of remodeling stores and changing the name to Big Kmart. In 1999 Kmart launched Martha Stewart products and also launched a website that focused on discounts items. In 2003, Kmart filled chapter 11 bankruptcy after that dropped Kmart resolute to regain strength within their corporation.
Every organization has its unique marketing, fiance, and human resource influences where each company is being managed differently. Just how successful each store is depends on the customers who make the decision of where to make the purchase. Walmart has been actual controversial regards to all their convenient locations. Several people have rallied against opening stores in a small rural areas where Walmart has put stores out of business, due to their competitive pricing these are the areas where Walmart grows well for the reason that there is such a small competition. Walmart continues to open stores while Kmart and Target are not.
Target stores which are 1,744 are located in areas where their is a high population. In the other hand Kmart only has 75 locations. Walmart center of attention is taken by the customers needs and all needs are taken care in one place. Walmart has been a market where customers can save money each week, Walmart in 2009 exceeded $400 billion in annual sales. Kmart offered blue and black light specials online introducing Super Kmart even though Kmart had a excellent idea they were forced to be in Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2003.
During the last years Walmart has tried to open new markets apparently they did in 2010 Walmart open their first store in India. Walmart did had a difficult time due to their higher start up cost, due to the price of real estate and retailer's. Walmart has been a very successful business all over the world there are 4,017 stores in the U.S. and 6,155 international stores. The number one main reason why Walmart has been a major competitor is due to the low prices especially now that Walmart matches others store prices. Walmart offers a large selection of services customers are able to go to only one place to make their shopping instead of going all over town.
Customers now can get oil change or new tires while buying their groceries, Walmart has also helped the community in 2005 Walmart took a leading role in disaster relief, contributing $18 million and 2,450 truckloads of supplies to victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita and in 2010 Walmart committed $2 billion through the end of 2015 to help end hunger in the United States. In 2012, Walmart celebrated 50 years of helping customers save money so they can live healthier. In addition, the company employed 2.2 million associates worldwide serving 200 million of customers each week at more than 10,000 stores in 27 different countries. Conclusion
Walmart has been a greatly successful retailer. Walmart has marked boundaries that others stores have not accomplished they are advanced and are here to stay at least for another 50 years. Walmart has implemented an organizational structure that works well for the business including the customers. Walmart approaches a wide collection of services that are in one place.
Now days, individuals do not want to travel to different stores all day just to get one thing. What people wants its to get what they need and continue with life and that is one of the benefits that Walmart stores have they have everything you need including a store everywhere that is near you. Today we live in a world that is suitable for us and if stores do not offer this then their organizations will not remain for long.
