The Role of United Nations

After the Second War World, the United Nations(UN) officially replaced the league of nations. At that time, human rights has risen and been regarded as the world value. Human Rights is understood as a “inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being”. In the progress in ensuring human rights, the UN has acted as a promoter and protector and his works have been notably considered from the formation of UN till now. With their efforts, the violations and oppositions of human rights have been improved significantly.

However, why do we have to protect human rights? Human rights rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled our human rights without discrimination in the aspects of social, civil, economics, political, cultural rights which are interrelated and interdependent to each other. These are the reasons why we protect human rights. The human rights international instruments have carried the importance in ensuring human rights.

First, the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR) by the UN General Assembly marked as the first collective agreement on a body of fundamental rights and freedoms to which all persons. The UDHR protects the human rights by general prohibition of discrimination and set forth various types of rights and obligations which are represented as articles and preamble. The set forth various types included political and civil rights, economics, social and cultural rights.

Second, other than the declaration, the nine core international Human Rights Treaties associated by the UN acted importantly like “ The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights” signed in 1976,” The Convention on the Rights of the Child” signed in 1990. Last, the other international Human Rights Instruments were also noted, like the declaration, guidelines, standard rules and recommendations etc. The human rights international instruments effectively enforce the abidance of different countries in following the human rights rule.

The UN has ensured the human rights by using lots of means. The Human Rights Council(HRC), which was established in 2006, is the principle UN intergovernmental body responsible for human rights and its mandate are to Promote universal respect for the protection of all human rights and freedom, to address situations of violations of human rights, including gross and systematic violations and to promote the effective coordination and the mainstreaming of human rights within the UN system.

The Universal Periodic Review(UPR) is a new method monitoring the fulfillment by each UN member states of its human rights obligations over a four-year cycle. Human rights are protected by the enforcement and monitoring of the UN council. In conclusion, the United Nations has played as a promoter and protector of human rights which has been interpreted as the universal right of all races all over the world. The works and international instruments carried out by the United Nations have done the major improvement and it successfully ensure firmly human rights to all the people in the world.
