Moving to the Cloud Rationale Enterprise software application vendors continue to enhance their services by being more flexible, Web based and capable of integration with other systems. Today, cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) application are making its way to the market. We all know that cloud computing is popular to business firms, offering cost and efficiency benefits to the users. But cloud-based enterprise applications also have drawbacks concerning its control over data and security. Description

Oracle offers enterprise – grade SAAS applications and provides enabling technology to PAAS and SAAS providers to build their own service offerings. SAAS refers to applications delivered as a service to end users through a browser. Some are commercial SAAS applications delivered by public cloud providers, while others are commercial and custom SAAS applications delivered via an enterprise’s private cloud. Oracle calls these offerings as Oracle on Demand. Oracle on Demand includes hosted and managed applications and remote applications management services, as well as subscription-based SaaS applications.

This means that oracle can provide customers with a spectrum of deployment options depending on customer preferences. Oracle on Demand has two SAAS applications namely Oracle CRM on Demand, an easy-to-use subscription-based CRM for sales, marketing, and contact center operations, and Oracle Agus Safety, an advanced drug safety and risk management solution for life science companies.

PAAS refers to an application development and deployment platform delivered as a service to developers who use the platform to build, deploy and manage SaaS applications. The platform typically includes databases, middleware and development tools, all delivered as a service via the internet. A virtualized and clustered Grid Computing architecture is often the basis for this infrastructure software. It is based on mature-proven technology defined for highest performance, availability and scalability since public cloud providers need to provide these at scale that exceeds even the largest private enterprises.

The platform is intended for use by teams of professional programmers. Because of the investment in these applications, it is important that they be based on an open platform that ensures maximum flexibility to re-platform. For enterprise building their own private clouds, Oracle provides the industry’s most complete, open and integrated Grid Computing stack of virtualized and clustered databases, middleware and storage, including infrastructure and grid management software. Grid Computing provides private clouds with many of the same benefits as public clouds such as high efficiency and utilization, elastic capacity for pay-as-you-go scale out, high quality of service, and high flexibility/agility. -------------------------------------------------

They make sure they meet the requirements they are expected and guarantee to do and then worked with excellence. Like in the case, RightNow did not only satisfy what Nikon wants them to do but they also surpassed their expectations. Moving to the cloud has allowed the company to focus more on value-adding activities rather than on costly services.

The open source cloud computing allows customers to modify it in a way most convenient to them, allowing them to become flexible and efficient in their workplace. Using open source cloud computing increases functionality, scalability and minimizes cost. Knowing your costs and earnings will allow you to evaluate your company’s performance, how effective your marketing strategies are and how much customers are willing to spend for you.

On the other hand, it also has its flaws pertaining to data and security, sacrificing availability in the future and full control of the application is not guaranteed. Moving to the cloud will give you an edge on cost cutting but it also has its own drawbacks when used inappropriately. -------------------------------------------------

Conclusion ------------------------------------------------- Our group concluded that moving to the cloud is a very important decision to make for any company weighing all its benefits over its drawbacks. Small to large companies are now moving their databases and systems from traditional ERP and CRM considering the cost-effectiveness it brings but not at the expense of their storage system. The only major drawback it brings is the privacy or security of their system.
