The Life of William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born on April 23 , 1564 and baptized on April 26 , 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon , England . He was the third child of John Shakespeare , a leather merchant , and Mary Arden , a local heiress . William had two older sisters , Joan and Judith , and three younger brothers , Gilbert , Richard , and Edmund . He attended the King’s New School in Stratford which taught reading , writing , and the classics .

On November 28 , 1582 , Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway . He was eighteen at the time while Anne was twenty-six . Anne was pregnant with their first daughter , Susanna in May 26 , 1583 . Then the twins , Hamnet and Judith , were born on February 2 , 1585 . But Hamnet died at age eleven from unknown causes . After the birth of the twins , William disappeared for seven years . One theory was that he might have gone into hiding for poaching game from the local landlord , Sir Thomas Lucy .

Another theory was that he might have been working as an assistant schoolmaster in Lancashire . By 1592 , there is evidence that William Shakespeare earned a living as an actor and a playwright in London and possibly had several plays produced . He was a managing partner in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men , an acting company in London . The company changed their name to the King’s Men after the crowning of King James in 1603 . They were very popular and records show that Shakespeare had works published and sold as popular literature .

By 1597 , William Shakespeare had published fifteen of the thirty-seven plays attributed to him . At this time , he purchased the second largest house in Stratford called New House for his family . It was a four day ride from Stratford to London so Shakespeare spent most of his time in the city writing and acting and came home once a year during the forty day Lenten period which is when the theaters were closed .

By 1599 , William and his business partners built their own theater on the south bank of the Thames River which the called The Globe . He wrote many successful plays such as Romeo and Juliet and is a respected man . Shakespeare died on April 23 , 1616 at age fifty-two . He wrote a will that split everything he possessed to his family but most of his possessions went to Susanna.
