Case Study 1: The Big Data Challenges Due Week 3 and worth 100 points Big Data is a term used to describe the voluminous amount of structured and semi-structured data generated by companies. The term is used when referring to petabytes (PB), exabytes (EB), and zettabytes (ZB) of data. Companies face challenges when it comes to capturing, storing, searching, and analyzing Big Data. The Volvo Car Corporation faced this problem because of the massive amount of data it was streaming from its vehicles. The Volvo Car Corporation is one of the biggest and most reliable car industry. It is also the most-recognized brands, with a long and proud history of world-leading innovations. At Volvo industry, they are very concern about their customers, they also make sure that passengers and drivers come first. The company also takes human-centered design seriously, always striving to develop some of the safest cars on the road. Volvo sells approximately 400,000 cars each year. In the following, we are going to look into how Volvo Car Corporation integrated the cloud infrastructure into its networks.

Explain how Volvo Car Corporation transforms data into knowledge. Identify the real-time information systems implemented, evaluate the impact of these implementations and argue how the Big Data strategy gives Volvo Car Corporation a competitive advantage. Volvo was successful in integrating the cloud infrastructure into its networks. “When Volvo Car Corporation split off from Ford in 2010, it needed to develop its own stand-alone IT environment in some areas. At the same time, the company wanted to improve its business intelligence (BI) capabilities and operational efficiency” (Microsoft Case Studies, 2012).

Volvo was successful in their attempt to interface the cloud infrastructure into its networks. According to the case study provided for the assignment, “They created vehicles that are in effect, highly connected, data-rich IT environments. With hundreds of sensors and CPUs embedded throughout the car, from the brakes to the central locking system, data is now being captured for use within the vehicle itself, and also, increasingly, for transmission via the cloud back to the manufacturer” (I-CIO, 2011).

The integration of the cloud infrastructure has allowed Volvo Car Corporation the ability to reduce their costs, and build a better business intelligence. The cloud option allows everyone to be connected to large volumes of data that at one time was not available. In the case study provided for this assignment Volvo recognizes that “huge volumes are streamed into a centralized analysis hub, the Volvo Data Warehouse, alongside data from customer relationship systems, dealership systems, and product development and design systems” (I-CIO, 2011).

All departments within the Volvo Car Corporation will have the same knowledge available to them concerning market products. The cloud will make it easier for customers to monitor the performance of their vehicles, and they will be the first to know if there is a recall notices, and review their vehicle’s maintenance records. Customer can have a peace of mind knowing that potential mechanical problems can be identified on time. Volvo Car Corporation was able to transforms data into knowledge by capturing data streams into their Data Warehouse, while gradually incorporating them to generate different types of important information.

“By splicing data together, we are pre-warned about potential issues such as mechanical problems that may indicate a potential flaw in a particular part-frequently before a customer is exposed to the issue. By applying a set of well-honed lean processes, Volvo is immediately able to resolve the problem by adjusting its manufacturing process moment for a particular set of circumstances? And we can tune that in the field: the next time a customer is in for a service, they can get a software upgrade that ensures the car is going to perform even better in accident”.

Volvo using this process and procedure will help them save some money because it is less expensive thing to do. Also if customers are impacted, Volvo’s brand can remain intact. A good example of this is with regard to Volvo’s continuous focus on safety. Their vehicles have rated among the safest and a lot of that, I think, it is their ability to review safety and system data collected from their vehicles. Volvo developed the most effective maintenance plan for their vehicles because they know when specific components need to be checked or replaced.

The real-time information systems implemented by Volvo organizations is the Transaction Processing System and Customer Relationship Management Systems. They used Processing to collect data from their customers input and then generate output on the data they have collected. Then they used Customer Relationship Management “to accumulate and track customer activities, including purchasing trends, product defects and customer inquiries” (Davoren, 2014, p. 1). Volvo are concern about their customer’s safety.

At their Art center department, they did a forensic examination on the Volvo cars that have been involved in car accident. They “we’re now able to extract huge amounts of digital information form a vehicle and see how well it responded”, Says Strader (I-CIO, 2011). By doing this research, Volvo was able to ask their customers questions and also gather enough information to increase its-market leading record. The Big Data strategy gives Volvo Car Corporation a competitive advantage. Big data can be very important to business and society just like internet has become nowadays.

The more data is generated, it can be analyzed and from analyzing it, it can lead to confident decision making. In a business, when there is a better decision making, it can generate profit, cost reduction and as well reduce cost risk. I do believe that knowledge is power and in this case, Volvo employed their knowledge /power to use a Big Data Strategy to provide better service to their customers by gathering some information’s. The use of Big Data also gives Volvo a creative advantage over its competitors.

This is done by placing near real time graphical reports and analytical findings throughout the collaborative process of design from engineering to manufacturing. REFERENCES: Davoren, J.
