President Abraham Lincoln the nation to heal as quickly as possible from the Civil War and planned to reunify the nation quickly he was assassinated in 1865 only days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender plans for Reconstruction were taken over by Vice President Andrew Johnson, who became president after Lincoln’s death 

President Andrew Johnson his own presidential reconstruction the congress refused to seat legislators from those states and advanced legislation to overrule the Southern actions When he persisted in trying to dismiss Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, he was impeached by the House of Representatives, and narrowly avoided conviction in the Senate and removal from office.

Radical Republicans opposed during the war by moderates and conservative factions led by Abraham Lincoln and after the war by self-described Passed their own reconstruction plan through Congress in 1864 but Lincoln vetoed it and was putting his own policies in effect when he was assassinated in 1865 Southern Democrats they were the definitive pro-slavery wing of the party opposed to both the anti-slavery Republicans. After the Democrats as a whole came to symbolize the mainstream left of the United States, the form, if not the content, of Southern Democratic politics began to change. 

Part 2 – Answer the following questions in a complete paragraph of your own words. What was the main issue relating to Reconstruction that divided Republicans at the end of the Civil War? If you had been a member of Congress at the time, what type of plan for Reconstruction would you have supported and why?

The main cause for the reconstruction of the divided republicans at the end of the Civil war was rebuild the governments of the southern states using the governments of the northern states as model. Another reason for the Reconstruction was to ensure that the free blacks in the south got their civil rights. If I had been a member of congress I would supported the republicans reconstruction idea because was the right way for the the blacks got their civil rights easily.
