Over the past decade, the health care system has change drastically. Many individuals believe it was for the better, and others believe that it has changed for the worst. Furthermore, these same individuals will not argue that change is constantly happening within the health care system. The main focus of this paper will be: managed care plans, and laws set in place to protect us, in the health care industry. In addition, I will also discuss the health care industry as a whole, as well as health care and alternative medicine.
Managed care plans have come a long way since 1973, when congress passed the Health Maintenance Organization Act, which encouraged rapid growth of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), the first form of managed care (“Managed Care”, December 2014). Managed care plans are known for reducing unnecessary hospitalizations, forcing providers to discount their rates, and causing the health-care industry to become more efficient and competitive (“Managed Care”, December 2014). According to the trade association America’s.
Health Insurance Plans, about 85-90 percent of insured Americans are now enrolled in plans with some form of managed care. In addition, managed care plans are somewhat of a source of protection for patients. However, many individuals argue that there is no consistent, direct correlation between the cost of care and its quality. Many would say this was caused the “cost of poor quality” caused by misuse, overuse and a waste amount of up to 30 percent of all direct health care spending.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was enacted by the United States Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996 (“Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act”, December 2014). There are two titles of HIPPA, which HEALTH CARE INNOVATION 3 allows protection to insurance companies and patients. Title one of HIPAA covers health care access, portability, and renewability; which regulates the availability and breadth of group health plans and certain individual health insurance policies. Title two of HIPAA covers prevention of health care fraud and abuse, administrative simplification, as well as medical liability reform.
The HIPAA health care act provides protection to individual’s personal information. In addition, the privacy rule also allows individuals the right to request that a covered individual correct any incorrect information. The effect of the health care industry and its changes has become a major issue for many individuals, in today’s society. Some of the impacts and changes within the health care industry have been: Staff roles and work content; Productivity, employment and earnings; Quality of patient care and patient outcomes; Workers safety and health (injuries, violence, and stress).
In addition, “key organizational changes in health care include a move from reliance on hospital- based care to more care being provided on an outpatient basis and in nursing homes; the move to managed care; an increase in for-profit health care providers; and corporate restructuring which includes horizontal (one owner, many hospitals) and vertical (across the care continuum) integration” (“The Effects Of Health Care Industry Changes On Health Care Workers And Quality Of Patient Care Summary Of Literature And Research”, Nov. 1997).
The health care system has come a long way since the 1800’s and even early 1900’s. As many individuals will know, drugs are a major issue. For example, many people fake injuries to obtain prescription drugs. Therefore, finding and offering alternative medication for drug addicts should be on the top of the list of changes made in the health care industry. “Alternative medicine is any of a range of medical therapies that are not regarded as orthodox by the medical profession, such as herbalism, homeopathy, and acupuncture. ” (“What Is Alternative Medicine? “, HEALTH CARE INNOVATION 4 1996-2014).
In addition, many parts of the world alternative medicine have made significant progress of people with injuries (with or without a drug addiction). Personally, I believe that alternative medicine can have a significant impact in the health care industry today. It can lower the percentage of drug additions and increase healthier living without the need of medication to help relieve pain. For example, many doctors have prescribed a healthy amount of daily exercise as an alternative to medication, to help aid with anxiety and stress. HEALTH CARE INNOVATION 5 References Managed care.
