There are several important challenges that are presented to women in law enforcement, today, but many can be dealt with by assessing the problems and finding new and better ways of dealing with them. Through many years of addressing these concerns, the challenges for women officers have become fewer and according to Lieutenant Governor, Joseph J. Fauliso, (Fauliso, 2006) “Women entering police work today step into a very different world from that of their predecessors of only a few years ago.
There are new opportunities for women in law enforcement and new challenges, as well. There is a new recognition of the contributions that women can make in their profession. ” Male prejudice is one of the main concerns for women in law enforcement and while negative attitudes from the male population have caused a major challenge for women officers, many steps are being taken to overcome these important issues.
Since many males view women as the weaker sex, it is a constant and reoccurring concern for women officers to continually prove their equality, within the police force. In the past, women have met with more discrimination, skeptical opinions and resistance from the public and also from their colleagues who have fought to change this bias way of thinking and overcome gender prejudice, so women in law enforcement can move forward in their area of expertise. There is also the question of competency that threatens the reputation of women police officers.
It is often a huge concern for many individuals when they discover that a female has been sent out to deal with police situations that have in the past, offered male officers and the question of whether they will be able to deal with the same problems at large is often a huge concern. Improvements in law enforcement training for women and the attitude changes from modern education have led to the positive way individuals look at women officers, today and has eased the constant stress that these female officers have endured.
By changing the negative attitudes of all individuals, in how women in law enforcement are viewed by their colleagues and the general public, women officers will be able to move forward in their careers and concentrate on their important duties, instead of their gender. Also, by continually offering better training to women in law enforcement, we will be better able to satisfy the question of “Can women officers perform their jobs, effectively and efficiently? ”
Women have certainly came a long way in gaining better reputations as competent police officers and with more time, it is highly probable that gender biasness and concerns for competency for women who are in law enforcement will diminish with proper training and education. Women officers must constantly be ready to take on serious and dangerous duties while performing as officers, where they remain in good physical condition and have the mental capabilities of dealing with various and critical situations that they will be faced with on a constant level.
By attending survival training and participating in strength training, women in law enforcement can also become better officers who are prepared to take on the most challenging situations that they will be faced with.
