USA Patriot Act

After the terrifying 9/11 terrorist attack, the government’s first move was to pass laws that will effectively stop any form of terrorism. The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (USA PATRIOT ACT) of 2001 (Electronic Privacy Information Center, 2009). The Act was remarkably approved more than a month after the attack of the twin towers.

The lives that were lost and the fear that the attack created has remarkably changed the world’s perception about security and terrorism. Apart from that, the world also united in condemning the act by attacking the home countries of the terrorists, Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the Patriot Act was enacted giving the federal government a stronger power which has amounted to disregard of civil liberties.

More significantly, the act has divided the society as to its continuation under the new administration. On one side, proponents of the Patriot Act support its continuation under the new administration. However, opposition and the greater number of the society believe that this time is the right time for the elimination of the USA Patriot Act. Hence, this paper will lay down the arguments that will effectively support the elimination of the USA Patriot Act.
