Democracy is a virtue that allows the citizens of a country to directly influence the governance system or the government power. The citizens are given a chance to express their opinions on issues that are being discussed or on choosing their desired candidates during elections. The opinion expressed by the majority is used to come to a consensus (if the majority rule of voting was applied). An electoral system is used to guide the voting system as it contains rules and regulations to be followed during the voting process.

It allows valid voting and effective aggregation of the results obtained to give the final result. The voting system was introduced into the United States constitution in the 18th century, where it outlined a mandatory rule of allowing the American citizens to play a part in the appointment of the United States House Representatives. A variety of voting methods were then devised to allow the American citizens to efficiently exercise their rights to vote, Carl Andrae from Denmark and Thomas Hare from England formulated the single transferable vote system in 1855 and 1857 respectively.

Today there are different types of voting systems that are used to come to a consensus; the preference voting system where the voters list their preferences from the most to the least preferred through balloting, range voting system where opinions are expressed separately in a scale, plurality voting system where voters are given the chance of choosing only one option and in the approval voting system the voters can choose many options (Castells 2000). America has constantly reviewed its constitution to amend the voting rights as the rights were exercised to citizens according to their race and gender.

In the Vietnam era only white males who had attained the age of 21 years were allowed to vote. In 1860s when the 13th, 14th and 15th review of the constitution declared slavery illegal, the slaves were allowed to vote, however many blacks were still restricted. The voting rights act that was implemented in 1960s after many people lost their lives trying to fight for the provision of voting rights and against discrimination of some races and gender saws the inclusion of the blacks’ males into the voting process.

The 19th amendments of the constitution lead to the abolition of any regulations that discriminated against the rights of many voters who were not among the qualified category of race, color and gender to exercise their voting rights. Youths that were I8 years old were unfairly treated as they were sent to war and were not allowed to vote. This rose to the 21st amendment of the constitution in 1971 that reduced the voting age from 21years to 18years. Today the American legislators are debating on whether to amend the constitution to allow felonies, illegal immigrants and youths aged 17 years to vote (Castells 2000).

The citizens who desire to be among those in the government hold political rallies in an effort to convince the public of their eligibility and hope the message they pass across manages to influence the decision that the public will make while voting. To enable them to hold a successful campaign they should device strategies that will enable them to hold the political campaigns in all areas they think will influence their enrollment into the government.

They should set aside enough money to help them run the campaigns, for instance the vying candidate should liaise with donors or groups that are interested in the succession of the vying party to get a good financial backup. Proper and sufficient use of the media should also be employed to help the vying candidates to popularize their mechanism for campaign and themselves. The campaigns should be well organized and the roles of the campaign manager, political consultant and activist be well elaborated to be able to set up a campaign program that is achievable.

Competent campaign managers, political consultants and activists should be well sought to help the political campaign to be directed in the right manner so as to meet its objective of influencing the opinion of the public to favor the party and the candidate. Also the composed message that summarizes the plans the vying candidate intends to do once in power should contain information that will interest the public. It should also cover on the most essential needs and wants of the public elaborating on the ways formulated to help accomplish those plans (Pickton & Broderick 2005).

The millennium young generation of America seems to be more versed with the political structure and system of America both socially and politically. They constitute about a fifth of the electorate and anticipate increasing the ratio in the near future. The interest the generation portrays should be well utilized by the older generation to guide and outline the rights and benefits obtained by exercising voting right. This will ensure the young generation participates more in the voting process and express their views and needs to make America favorable to them, as they are the future holders of America.

The young generation should also be involved in political activities such as political debates that will help to nurture their interest in politics and voting. The government should also device ways that will capture the attention of the young rebels and offenders who indulge themselves into criminal activities thus dropping out of school. They should try to find out why they indulge into unlawful practices and find ways of curbing the opportunities that leads to development of the unlawful practice.

They should also counsel them and directly or indirectly nurture their interest towards politics and voting. This will highly influence many young people to vote and participate in political activities as the voice of the rehabilitated youths is used to enlighten the others (Cobley 1996). A higher percentage of the young generation that are eligible to vote have no time to engage themselves into political activities as their time is preoccupied with the numerous full time and part time jobs they do to make be able to sustain their needs.

Therefore the government should improve its activities and policies that will improve the economic status of the country to reduce the high taxes and prices on goods and services required. This will create ample time for the employed youths to indulge in political activities as most of their time will not be consumed by employment. The young generation will also appreciate the role of a political system in their country and change the negative attitude they have towards politicians and the parliament, thus involve themselves in political activities.

The young generation should be educated on their rights as American citizens to be able to exercise their opinions. These topics should be added to the education curriculum to ensure every youth who attends school is well versed with the political structure of their country and their benefits and rights of being citizens of that country. Other methods of educating them can be devised for example inclusion of the message that will trigger the importance of voting, into the activities that the young generation indulge in mostly.

For instance musicians can be used to compose songs that stipulate the importance of voting, films and movies that are directed should incorporate the theme of the importance of voting either directly or indirectly and also magazines and books that the young generation reads should be have information that educates them on the importance of taking part in the voting process (Cobley 1996). Nurturing the interest, knowledge and anticipation of young tucks into political activities will go a long way in improving the economic and social status of the country.

This is because most of them will have a positive attitude of building their country to benefit them in the future and will thus advocate against criminal activities and drug usage which derails the energy and focus of potential youths.
