Synopisis 6sigma

Summary: This project undertakes the implementation of six sigma at GAIL (India) Limited Dabhol-Bangalore Pipeline project. The pipeline extends from Dabhol till Bangalore, transporting gas (LNG) from Dabhol. The pipeline network then supplies RLNG to various customers in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. The total capacity of the pipeline is 16 MMSCMD. It includes spur lines for supply of gas at various locations viz Sangli, Ratnagiri, Kohlapur, Bijapur, Belgaum, Goa, Dharwad, Devangere, Harirar, Tumkur and Bangalore.

The part of the pipeline taken for study in the report is the spur line to Bangalore, supplying RLNG to Totoya-Kirloskar. The study of variations and rectification using six sigma methodology that occur during the supplying of RLNG will be done. The process will include the implementation of DMAIC method to analyse and overcome the variations that occur during the transportation of gas from GAIL’s pipeline premises to customer’s pipeline premises.

Hence, an effort has been put to implement the same in the gas distribution process and gain out of the benefits of the same. Objective of the project:

* To study the variations occurring during the transportation of RLNG * To analyse and minimize these variations by the implementation of six sigma. * To present the results to the company so that they can take necessary actions to overcome these variations.

Innovativeness and usefulness: The outcome of the project will help the company realise the loop holes in its process and take necessary actions accordingly. Also, they will be able to transfer the voice of customer to statistical problems that can be easily quantified and analysed. Methodology:

The research methodology will be an exploratory methodology. The data will be primary and secondary both, taken from the company’s sources. Hardware and software to be used The project will use the software MINITAB. Testing technology to be used Testing technology will be the Six Sigma methodology (DMAIC Process). PROJECT OUTLINE Background The company, GAIL (India) Limited has developed this pipeline to suffice the need of gas of various customers in the Southern and Western states of the country. The states that will benefit from this project are Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. The key objective to develop this pipeline network is to help the various organisations (customers) fulfil their energy demand via the use of RLNG and minimizing on the use of other forms of energy that are hard to replenish and procure. The usage of RLNG not only helps these organisations to save on their expenses but also contributes to the ecosystem as this form of energy is eco-friendly.

The Project The main aim behind the development of this project was to suffice the need of energy by various organisations to carry out their operations without any hurdles. The idea behind the study of this pipeline network is analyse the variations that are seen during the transportation of gas from company’s premises to customer’s premises via pipelines. The objectives of the project are:

* To study the variations occurring during the transportation of RLNG * To analyse and minimize these variations by the implementation of six sigma. * To present the results to the company so that they can take necessary actions to overcome these variations.

Outcomes The following are the expected outcomes of the project: * Identification of the process variations. * Identification of voice of customers (VOCs) * Conversion of VOC to critical to quality (CTQs) * Detailed analysis of the CTQs and minimization of project variations. * A more efficient process that would minimize the cost for company and suffice the need of customers.

Time frame: The study will be done for a period of two months at GAIL (India) Limited Dabhol-Bangalore Pipeline Project office in Bangalore and the part of the pipeline understudy would be exchange of RLNG between the company and its customer Toyota-Kirloskar Motors.

* The project implements the methodology of Six Sigma to study and analyse the variations and accordingly recommend the solutions to the company (GAIL).
