One topic that is very near and dear is suicide prevention. The reasoning behind this is that on January 10th, 2019 our only son Brodi Barnes shot and killed himself at our home. We found him several hours after he had done this to himself. This tragedy has been the worst thing our family has ever had to endure. We as a family have been completely crushed and we will always have problems with this for the rest of our lives. Never in a million years would our family have ever thought that one of our children would have ever done something like this.
As a mother never seeing any changes in a child and that is one of the worst things to have to do is to sit and think about all the time. Wishing something could have been done, something to change his mind and make him not want to take his own life. Parents sometimes have no indication that there was ever a problem. Sometimes they never leave a note saying goodbye or why something was so bad that they felt this was the only way out. Parents should have more information on things to watch for so maybe they could have prevented this and try to get their children the help they truly need. Parents not knowing why will always be the worst thing a family will do.
Suicide is a National issue we face everyday across the United States. The surgeon general had an idea of getting awareness out to the public by introducing the public to the increased issues with mental health. They wanted the public to be aware of the issues facing people with mental illness, so that way they can help address the issues that can lead up to suicide in our country. They wanted the public to be aware that there are many place that are available to help people address many different mental illnesses that can lead someone to suicide. These places introduced several different types of antidepressant drugs to try to help with the suicidal tendencies. These medications ended up not living up to what they were intended for. One of the biggest ways causing suicide is with guns in males between 15 to 24 and 65 to 84. We as a society are not as prepared to deal with the different types of mental illness that goes along with suicide. With some people they never show that there is a problem until it is too late to do anything to help them.
Suicide prevention is something that should be a very big part of every single family in the United States. I feel that we should make it a point to get every single person who is depressed or on some form of medication for a mental illness into a class to help them. Suicide prevention should be in the schools and taught to help kids recognize all the signs or symptoms that someone they might know could possibly do something like this one day.
There are so many kids now a days that take their own lives on a daily basis because they have no idea how exactly to deal with what is going on with themselves. I think the more things offered to help anyone will be a great benefit to families in the long run so that they will never have to experience the pain and emotional trauma that suicide has on a person. The pain and trauma my family has endured since my son committed suicide in January has forever changed and impacted my family for the worst. I wish we would have been able to have known what to look for before this tragedy struck my family. I feel my biggest hurt with this is not knowing he even thought about doing this and not ever going to have the chance to have the opportunity to help him work through what was bothering him that day.
I just still can’t get over the fact that I will never see my son again, never get to tell him I love him, hug him, stay up late to make sure he gets home safe. I will never get to spend another day with him. Missing hm has been the hardest thing I think I have ever had to deal with in my life. Suicide prevention will be something I will forever be trying to get people to know more about and be able to try to help someone else who has had some type of trauma happen to them.
Suicide happens way to much in our society and needs to be talked about more to be prevented from happening. We as a society need to stop hiding behind closed doors and help those who can not help themselves. If we learn how to help and more ways to be able to identify he signs then maybe we can hopefully save many lives. It will help not the person thinking about suicide but also their families as well. It will save families from ever having to feel the pain and torture of them blaming themselves because they didn’t see the problems to begin with.
