According to Abraham Lincoln, freedom is the last and best hope of earth. Inferring from Aristotle's quote, freedom is very essential in human's existence; without freedom, existence is useless. Moreover, freedom has been defined as the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action (Merriam Webster). Through freedom, a person can act or choose to act according to what he believe is right without any interference from other people or from any thing. In addition, in American history, freedom has caused thousands of lives in struggling to win various battles in the pursuit of liberty.
Freedom has also shaped a very important role in the molding of the global nations until each independent nation has attained their freedom from foreign interventions. Moreover, in the early history of America, freedom has given utmost importance. At present, it is inculcated in the American Constitution. The freedom of the American citizens has been contained in the United States Constitution, among others, is on the recognition of the citizens to practice their own religion and the press as stated in the Amendment 1 of the Constitution:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for redress of grievances. ” Furthermore, citing the citizens as free is included in the National Anthem which states that: “... And the star-spangled banner in the triumph doth wave. O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!... And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall we wave.
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! ” On the other hand, according to Simone Weil, a French philosopher, equality is the public recognition, effectively expressed in institutions and manners, of the principle that an equal degree of attention is due to the needs of all human beings. A human being, who exists in a society composed of different people, demands and longs to be treated alike. Moreover, by instinct, a person does things that others do and requires the same treatment that a government extends to others.
In addition, the equality has been considered by the framers of the Constitution by virtue of Fourteenth Amendment; “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. ”
However, the question lies on the determination whether freedom can be harmonized with equality. In American society which is populated with different people of different cultures, freedom to exist is granted to all but some are deprived of right to equality. During the past decades, particularly in the 1960's, inequality of treatment was a common practice. The natives were forcibly deprived of their lands and were denied of their civil rights while some belonging to the minority class were made slaves (MSN Encarta). Some people during those periods were deprived of their freedom and equality.
