The paper requires analysis about the importance of distinguishing between being a member of a profession and being a professional in law enforcement structure. To understand this concept ultimately, it is important to define the two terms. Profession is an occupation, career or vocation where specialized knowledge of a field, subject or science is applied. In this case, the subject is applied in law enforcement structure that entails the duties of law enforcers such as police officers. Profession is applied in occupations that involve formal qualification and prolonged academic training.
On the other hand professional is about individual modes of behavioral observation that promote trust and respect (Shuy Roger W. , 2005). A Professional is an individual who follows occupation as a means of livelihood driven by the aim of gain. A professional in this case can be related to a police officer who carries on with his or her duties to enforce law and order. The officers execute their duties with an objective of earning a salary and protecting property and individuals in the country through maintenance of peace. The two terms depend on each other whereby a professional is known through evaluation of certain profession.
In the case of law enforcement structure, it is important to distinguish being a member of a profession and being a professional (Wendel Brandley, 2001). The objective of distinguishing such terms is to establish a clear instance of executing duties. Being a member of a profession entails that, the individual should correspond to certain code of ethics while carrying on with duties. Professions can be learned regardless of the professional race, character or class and this is a clear indication that, legal profession is very diverse.
A major distinction between profession and professional skills are the capabilities within a profession while professional skill level is a progression metric used as a prerequisite for gathering relevant information as is required by law enforcement structure. The law enforcement structure is a profession that requires the professionals in this case police officers and the judiciary to play their role efficiently. Differentiation of being a member of certain profession and being a professional is important in defining the role of each party.
Law enforcement process consists of various organs that work in coordination to promote peace, protect individual property and safeguard the welfare of citizens in a country. Being a member of a profession consists of a number of officers in the field of law enforcement act. This means that each person is responsible for his or her own work. Clear definition of each individual profession is important because it leads to reduction of conflicts among professionals. Being a professional means developing skills in the field of interest whereby in our case it is law enforcement structure.
The structure of law enforcement is a critical department in any given country (Edwards Harry T. , 1992). It involves the services of different individuals with skills in certain aspects of law. For instance, the police officers are concerned with maintenance of peace and protection of individual’s property by arresting criminals and presenting them in a court of law. Once in the court law officers such as judges and lawyers take over the proceedings of court hearing. These professionals have their roles defined through academic training, skills and experience.
It is therefore important to differentiate between being a member of a profession and being a professional to avoid conflict of interest.
