I have grown to realise that politics is a very powerful and influential tool and, following the devastating events of 9/11, my enthusiasm and will to learn more about the subject has increased. I am now hoping to further this interest at degree level. At present I am studying the following A levels; History, Media studies and Sociology. Studying a range of subjects has provided me with essential skills which will help me achieve my goals and enable me to progress further at university.
Such skills consist of the ability to analyse sources, approach issues from different perspectives and to present and debate on issues with clarity and confidence. A level History has provided me with a range of transferable skills, focusing widely on the ability to understand, scrutinise and evaluate a range of sources from different perspectives as well as addressing the political issues behind decisions undertaken in various countries based on its diverse cultures and values.
The coursework I have undertaken to study for Media is the production of a documentary titled, ’The War on Terror’. The study of this module will allow me to focus on a current political issue, and provide my peers with an insight into an issue which affects many people today. The study of Sociology has allowed me to understand how and why there are so many changes in societies essentially how the political issues at any given time, (for example the feminist movement) have a great significance in shaping society and reforming laws.
I have been chosen from my History class to attend, Advance History Master classes at Queen Mary, University of London. The programme gave me an interesting insight and an enjoyable experience, which helped me to widen my understanding of history. Among other activities in college, I have acted as a student ambassador for my Sixth Form. I visited several schools in order to encourage prospective students to study their A Levels and Vocational courses at my college; this gave me ample opportunity to develop skills in organisation, diplomacy and to improve upon my public speaking.
I am particularly intrigued by international relations, how different governments sometimes attempt to collaborate effectively in order to restore peace or identify solutions in times of crisis, at times this is not successful, for example: the situation in Iraq. I attended a workshop on the role that Amnesty International plays, which further increased my interest in the role of the United Nations.
My career ambition is to work for the United Nations, with my aim to address social problems, such as issues relating to poverty around the world. My view in life is not only to take an interest in domestic political issues but also in global concerns. I am keen to expand my political understanding, as I enjoy absorbing a wide variety of political ideas and follow current affairs with great interest. I am therefore greatly looking forward to the opportunity to study for a politics degree and succeed in my career aims.
