Organizational Politics Sample

Organizational politics are a part of everyday life within a company. The use of these politics can be positive or negative depending on how they are implemented by managers and leaders in the company. The affect on communication in an organizations culture is defined by how leaders as well as employees treat each other and communicate daily. Culture is established in the way people interact and communicate information.

Leadership based on the companies values and goals are developed and ingrained into every day activities to become a core part of the communication and business procedures. When organizational politics are positive the influence has a positive effect on productivity and creates a work environment that people enjoy. Individual characteristics help to create a political environment for motivation and confidence. When employees are happy they are less likely to look elsewhere for the respect and benefits they need. There is not a company that does not have some political aspects going on.

With the right leader distributing the responsibility and providing benefits so everyone feels engaged there is less need for employees to seek out ways to politically destroy or advance themselves at the expense of others. Political behaviors used to influence the goals and decision-making process creates an environment of dishonesty and unethical behaviors among employees. Those in positions of power get away with these practices successfully at the expense of those unwilling to play the political game. The increase in job anxiety and stress from not engaging creates defensiveness and negativity in the workplace.

When job satisfaction is low the likelihood of helping others and passing on knowledge or basic information decreases. The decrease in communication initiates lower productivity and increased employee turnover. When leaders are allowed to use illegitimate political behavior the goals of the company are harder to achieve. Organizational politics are activities not required as part of an individual’s role within an organization but are used to influence, or attempt to influence, the distribution of advantages and disadvantages.

The leader’s ability to carefully balance the conditions to allow employees to perform at their best by giving more responsibility and having higher expectations permits open communication so everyone feels engaged to benefit from what the company can provide. The employees watch to see how leaders work and then they follow their lead, when balance is achieved people are productive to the company, when potential conflicts are present gains are made at the expense of others.

Power and politics are a big part of business and the impact depends on whether leaders use positive or negative power for influence (Zeiger, 2013). Politics can influence who has the power and how it is used to form the culture of the workplace for maximum productivity. ? References Robbins, S. P. , & Judge, T. A. (2011).
