This paper will discuss the meaning of Organizational Behavior and understanding human behavior. I will discuss Organizational Behavior within the Criminal Justice Agency and the important elements of Organizational Behavior and how these elements can challenge the effectiveness of an agency. Organizational Behavior is the study of individual behavior and group dynamics in organizations. An article that I read stated that Organizational Behavior is an application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act in organization.
Whatever career and individual choose, the behavior of the human beings tends to shape the behavior of others. The primary concern of organizational behavior is psychosocial, interpersonal, and behavioral dynamics in organizations. The variables that affect human behavior at work are relevant to the study of organizational behavior. These organizational variables include jobs, communication, performance, design, organizational design and structure. The variables are very important in individuals’ behavior and group dynamics.
Organizational Behavior encompasses mass professions, companies and organizations, with the goal of increasing productivity, attaining goals, promoting employee development and learning, motivating employee and providing customer service to external and internal stakeholders. The company that I worked for mission was to keep an open line of communication with employees and customers to increase sales and productivity. Good leadership in a company or criminal justice agency creates a pattern of working relationship which insures the achievement of the company’s goals and objectives.
It provides the responsibility and accountability of everyone in a company or agency to do their assigned task effectively and to recognize relationship patterns based on upper management structure of leadership. An important element in the Criminal Justice agency that relates to Organizational Behavior would be the ability to formulate a purpose and mission for the agency. After the purpose and mission has been established, the Criminal Justice agencies need to strategize to fulfill the purpose and mission. A diverse workforce and cultural diversity is another element of Organizational Behavior.
Workforce diversity encompasses all forms of differences among individuals, including culture, gender, age, ability, religion, personality, social status, and sexual orientation. The attention to diversity increased because of the change in the population. Managers in the different agencies, such as organizations, companies, criminal justice system, and correctional system feel that dealing with diversity successful is a paramount concern for two reason, managers need to find ways to motivate diverse work groups. Managers also need to know how to communicate effectively with employees who have different values and language skills.
The effectiveness of Organizational Behavior in the Criminal Justice agency is being able to provide organization activities and to assess performance. Agencies need to evaluate the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies, criminal courts, correctional system, and the criminal justice organizations. Evaluating effectiveness requires more than just collecting and analyzing crime statistics. Gauging effectiveness knows the agency’s goals, purpose, mission, and valid performance for determining the extent to which it achieved these objectives.
Cultural Diversity in companies and the Criminal Justice agency has grown because of the globalization of business. Many people of diverse national origins find themselves cooperating in teams to perform the work of the organization. The Criminal Justice System and Correctional agencies also form teams in order to fulfill a task because of the high crime rate. Criminal Justice agencies deals with culture diversity internal and externally. A Criminal Justice agency remains dynamic in society and must adapt to the changing demographic, priorities and problems of those in society.
Criminal Justice agencies face the challenges of creating a work environment that will attract potential and satisfy current employees. When seeking employment, individuals are looking for learning opportunities, share the same values and are simply an enjoyable environment. Criminal Justice agencies are customer-driven and market-driven organization (Schermerhorn, Jr, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005, p. 8). An organization include employees which cause an organization to examine the manner in which they recruit and retain staff, valued employees are a critical asset in fulfilling their purpose.
Criminal Justice agencies are compelled to promote and justify their purpose and actions to employees, the public and governing entities. The Criminal Justice agencies managerial skills are very important because the employees will work harder to fulfill the agency tasks, if they respect and have confidence in their leader. Effective leadership has the ability to think analytically without getting bogged down in the details, timely decision making, building consensus without compromising results, and getting people to do what agencies or companies want them to do.
Criminal Justice agencies are faced with the effects of Organizational Behavior, the recognition and ability to positively enhance the agency. Organizational Behavior increases the agency performance and purpose. With that said, agencies have the ability to hire employees and provide services to the community and government. In order to improve Organizational Behavior, the Criminal Justice agencies need to create a work environment for employees through effective management, creativity, and diversity.
