On the Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter Andy was a 16 years old teenager who had just been stabbed below the ribs. Andy was part of a gang called “The Royals”. Andy just stopped by the shop only to buy some cigarettes and next moment he’s on the ground bleeding, Quote- “He had been stabbed 10 minutes ago.” Andy had a girlfriend called Laura who he had left when he went to get the cigarettes and she was the only thing he could think of, Quote- “He wondered if Laura was dancing wondered if she had missed him yet.”
Few people had walked past Andy and as they noticed that he was wearing the ‘The Royals jacket’ they refused to help the bleeding teenager but just left him. Andy didn’t know joining a popular gang group would be end of his life. Andy is in complete denial, Quote- “I can’t be dying, No that’s stupid. However as time goes so late, and his body tell him that he is, in fact, dying, he chooses to accept it. In the last few minutes of his life, Andy realized that there is no pride in being a Royal, a part of a gang.
The title and the jacket made seem like a faceless Royals to other faceless Guardians, Quote “He wondered suddenly if the Guardians who had ambushed him and knifed him and ever once realised he was Andy” The police came over to inverstigate the scene over Andy’s death and when he saw Andy’s jacket he got his note book out and headed up “The Royal” Then he continued on writing, Quote- “A Royal, he said then he began writing.
