1.What is nutrition? Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives?
“Nutrition is the science that links foods to health and disease. It includes the processes by which the human organism ingests, digests, absorbs, transports, and excretes food substances.” (UOP, 2011). Nutrition is a vital aspect to developing and maintaining good health. Nutrition is essential to our daily lives because it does affect an individual’s quality of life and how long that life is. Lazy lifestyles along with poor diets are risk factors that cause chronic diseases.
2.What is the connection between nutrition and health?Nutrition and health are directly related. Proper nutrition is necessary in order to have good health. An individual’s health depends on the type of nutrition that individual chooses to consume.
There are other factors, but one’s nutrition is extremely vital if not the most important. If an individual is not taking in the appropriate amount of nutrients the potential for health consequences increase. Too much of a specific nutrient can be harmful even if it is considered to be good for you. Too much is bad.
3.What are the six classes of nutrients? What are essential nutrients? What are the sources of nutrients? What do nutrients do? The six classes of nutrients are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Essential nutrients are just that, nutrients that are essential for proper nutrition. Essential nutrients are energy-yielding nutrients, water, vitamins, and minerals.
The sources of nutrients are anything that has nutrients within your diet. Though some are better sources than others. There are three categories of nutrients. They are those that provide calories for energy, those for growth, development, and maintenance, and those to keep the body functioning properly.
4.How do vitamins and minerals work?Vitamins can contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, and other elements making up a variety of chemical structures. They enable many chemical reactions to occur in the body. Some of these reactions can help release energy trapped in carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Minerals exist as one or more of the same atoms. They are structurally simple, inorganic substances, which for the most part do not contain carbon atoms. Minerals affect the functionality of the nervous system, water balance, structural systems, and many other cellular processes.
5.What does it mean to eat a balanced diet? Why is food choice important for good nutrition? A balanced diet consists of everything that your body needs to function properly. The human body needs macronutrients and micronutrients. The macronutrients consist of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and water while micronutrients are vitamins and minerals.
Of the later an individual only needs very small quantities, but large amounts, in comparison, of the macronutrients. Food choice is important for good nutrition because the human body needs only specific amounts of each nutrient. Going over or under those amounts can have negative effects. Strategy is needed to help understand what to eat so as not to surpass those amounts and still feeling hungry or vice a versa.
6.What is undernutrition? What is overnutrition? Under nutrition is also known as malnourishment. It is intended to describe a situation where an individual is not taking in the necessary amount of nutrients to maintain good health. Over nutrition is just the opposite. It describes a situation where an individual is taking in over the necessary amount of nutrients to maintain good health. In both cases the individual is at a higher risk for many common health problems and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
7.Why is physical activity important as it relates to nutrition and health? Physical activity is important as it relates to nutrition and health in many ways. One way is it reduces the risk of heart disease by increasing your heart rate over a period of time. Another way is by burning excess calories to prevent obesity. Physical activity reduced stress and less stress means improved health. Good nutrition and physical fitness are directly related. Without good nutrition physical fitness will suffer. It also prevents diabetes, high blood pressure, and colon cancer.
8.Where might you find dietary recommendations? What are the recommended dietary allowances (RDA)? What are dietary reference intakes (DRIs)? You might get dietary recommendations from a nutritionist. Another place to go to receive advice is the gym to talk to a personal trainer.
The recommended dietary allowance represents a norm for planning and assessing dietary intake and the levels of vital nutrients necessary to meet the needs of most healthy people. The figures used in the RDAs and DRIs are not exact for everyone, but an estimate for most. The dietary reference intake is a system of nutrition recommendations. The DRIs came after the RDAs.
9.The United States Department of Agriculture created a diagram titled MyPlate. What is this diagram? Why should someone study this diagram? MyPlate is a nutrition guide that the USDA or United States Department of Agriculture created to help Americans better understand how to eat healthy and understand proper nutrition. It is no secret that the United States is well behind the rest of the world when it comes to eating nutritiously.
That is why the United States is at the bottom of the rankings when it comes to obesity and the chronic health risks related to that. Everyone should study the MyPlate diagram because it is important to understand what it is that your body needs to be as healthy as it can be.
10.What are some tools for diet planning? There are so many tools out there as it pertains to diet planning. Everyone has an opinion and some will even try to sell it to you. For starters, studying and understanding the MyPlate diagram would be beneficial. Consider also integrating 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity into the diet plan. The gym is an amazing tool and should be used. Tools such as a journal to write down what you ate, food measurement tools for you become aware of the quantities you’re taking in, and a calorie counter to keep an accurate count of your calories.
11.What is the calorie intake calculator? What factors does this calculator take into account? The calorie intake calculator is just that. It is a calculator that calculates the amount of calories you should take in daily to either lose weight or to maintain. It is an extremely effective tool when attempting to maintain a healthy diet or to lose weight. It is important to keep track of your calories. Many items that average individuals consume will not have a label identifying the amount of calories inside to keep track. The calculator takes into account your age, weight, height, sex, and your average weekly physical exercise.
12.What are some dangers associated with dieting? There are some dangers associated with dieting. Dieting without all of the appropriate knowledge could definitely be dangerous for many reasons. If an individual is not taking in enough nutrients that person will eventually get sick. Malnutrition is a major concern. Misinformation from unreliable sources is a concern, especially if they sponsor dangerous practices such as bulimia or anorexia. Another danger is losing and gaining the weight repeatedly. This cycle has been associated with an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and depression.
13.What is the best way to lose weight? Explain your answer and provide at least one source, formatted consistent with APA guidelines, to support your answer. The best way to lose weight is through a strict diet and a strenuous exercise regimen. Although many people are misled into believing otherwise, exercise and dieting require strong willpower and a never give up attitude. It is not easy and many have difficulty reaching their goals simply because they are too weak minded or they thought it would be easy.
You have to go into it understanding that it will be hard, but also with the attitude that nothing will stop you. People act like it is ok to cheat every once in a while, but it is not if your goal is to lose weight. Hard truths and tough love are needed to fix this soft American population (Nichols, 2013). 14.How does exercise influence body weight?Exercise influences body weight in many ways. It helps people to lose weight, to keep the weight off, and fight obesity. How this happens is simple. Exercise increased an individual’s heart rate and doing so increases the amount of calories your body burns during a period of time.
The calories being burned come from multiple places, one of which is fat. Some exercises burn more calories than others. Strength training burns more calories, but may not show it on the scale because it also creates greater density in your muscles and muscle tissue weighs more than fat. Cardio can actually burn muscle as well causing a greater loss of body weight.
15.Consider your personal dietary habits. What are some modifications you might make to promote good health?
16.How does today’s society affect our nutritional habits? Today’s society has a strong influence on our nutritional habits. Everybody is moving at light speed in today’s society and fast food restaurants are taking advantage of people’s rushed mentality. People want to eat and go not even realizing how it may affect their health. The food has extremely high calorie counts along with fat, cholesterol, and sugary drinks.
The portions are getting bigger as the average person’s appetite increases. People are eating more and worse foods than ever before. This along with the fact that technology has made everything easy is a recipe for disaster. Many people no longer have to work strenuous jobs. They sit on their butt to get to work only to sit on their butt for ten more hours. The lack of physical activity along with the terrible nutritional habits is making Americans look bad.
