Neighborhood Crime

A close cooperation with power companies to help fix streetlights is needed. Coordination of landlord communication is very vital because this is not well developed in high crime areas. It is necessary to share information on troublesome residents because it can help to stop them from spreading destructive behavior as when they evict, they move to a nearby building with new landlord who does not know them. This also play an important role in that it creates an opportunity for the landlords to put informal pressure to each other to maintain their building both inside and outside as a way to discourage crime and to foster trust.

It should be noted that neighborhood watch group program are not parallel security programs. No, the main strategy or aim to neighborhood community watch program is to form organized groups of neighborhood residents who are responsible in carrying out watch out for criminal and suspicious behavior and report it to law enforcers to help prevent crime an enhance cooperation among the residents and the police. As such, this is seen to provide local law enforcers with sensitive eyes and ears to watch out any type of criminal activity that may be happening and hence promote neighborhood security.

Basically neighborhood crime watch can handle all type of crimes but mostly they deal in residential burglary and other crimes that happens around the home such larceny and vandalism. The presence of community crime watches deters criminal s to undertake their activates in the neighborhood. To start a neighborhood Watch, it requires forming of a small committee of neighbors to discuss the needs and possible problems. Date and venue is supposed to be decided so that to make first Neighborhood Watch meeting. From there, law enforcement is contacted with a request for crime prevention officer to be present during the time of the meeting.

Before the day of the meeting information about crime statistics is need though often crime is underreported. Then contacting as many neighbors is necessary and asking them if they are victims of burglary or other crimes or if they have taken any steps to protect their homes and they are willing to attend the meeting to organize the Neighbor hood Watch. During the meeting, volunteers can be sought to be appointed as coordinators and block watch leaders. It may also require the neighborhood to be demarcated into blocks and volunteered block leaders who have been assigned to these blocks can serve as contact persons.

Coordinator is important for the successfulness of the program. Some of the coordinator responsibilities include expansion of the program, acting as liaison between the Watch members and law enforcement officers, civic groups and block captains. Also this person is responsible for arranging neighborhood crime prevention training programs, obtaining and distribution of crime prevention materials like stickers and sign and encouraging members in the participation Special training on how to recognize and report suspicious activity and home and neighborhood security may be provided by the police in subsequent meetings as planned.

The last important thing in Neighborhood Watch program which need to be done after it has been established is citizens’ awareness. Monthly meeting of the Watch group is necessary which should be utilized for programs related to developing citizens’ awareness and how to respond to suspected or actual criminal activity. Topics such as recognizing suspicious activity, describing and reporting events, vehicles and persons, home security inspections, home security measures, telephone security and confrontations with intruders should strongly be featured.

When all these aspects discussed here are synchronized appropriately, Neighborhood Watch programs can function effectively (http://www. solutionsforamerica. org/thrivingneigh/crime-prevention. html, n. d). Therefore, Neighbourhood Watch Program is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs. In many countries, they have been used to bring together citizens and law enforcements to help deter crime and thereby making communities safer. This is because the impact seen on the crime prevention by law enforcement alone is not great as when citizens join together to work with law enforcement to bring down crime rates.

Its effectiveness is based on the concept that involvement of community members in the watch programs decreases the opportunity for criminals to commit crime instead of efforts to change their behavior or motivation.
