Military Appearance and Uniform

In my essay I will research on the Military Uniform and Appearance. I will also research on the AR 670-1. This will help me understand and value more the importance of the uniform that I ware and it will be helpful in future reference in my military career. In my essay I will do some comparison from our military appearance and uniforms from other types of jobs that also use uniforms and have different standards that sets us apart from the everyday use of a regular uniform.

In everyday life we see people wearing uniforms to be identify in the job that they do an the Army has the uniform to show that a member wearing it is a soldier and that’s what makes it so important. An Army uniform is actually described in Army regulations and Federal law allows military uniforms to be only worn by persons serving in the military. Uniforms tell you not only that a person belongs to a certain group but also that person has skills other people don’t. A police officer is only allowed to wear this uniform if he/she has completed specific training.

A nurse is only allowed to wear this uniform if they have completed nursing school. You wouldn’t ask a police officer to perform open heart surgery and you wouldn’t ask a doctor to arrest someone. Think of doctors, nurses, police, firemen and soldiers. A uniform, as opposed to a costume, is clothing of a certain type, style, and make up that is required by the organization the person belongs to. An Army uniform is actually described in Army regulations and Federal law allows military uniforms to be only worn by persons serving in the military.

People in the armed services are different from other people. The army uniform tells you that the person wearing it belongs to a specific country and organization: The United States Army. This means the person wearing it has taken an oath to the government of the United States to defend the nation, even if it means they might get hurt or even die. The Army has two types of uniforms, one for dress and one for work. The Army work uniform is like a fireman’s uniform – it helps protect the wearer. The uniform provides protection for the wearer.

It is a type of camouflage because of the pattern to protect the wearer from being seen. It tells you s/he is a member of the US Army and its well trained in all aspects. The wear and appearance of soldiers in the United States Army are while in uniform should be neat. There should be no excess “things” in a person’s pocket but it should lie down flat. The person wearing the uniform should look neat and concise not drawing attention to themselves. Soldiers should look like a unit or group with everyone blending in not standing out because they look different. In the army it’s important to be part of a team.

This is important in the armed forces especially because of what they do. In the army, marines, navy, and air force soldiers are called upon to fight in the battle field. If soldiers cannot show unity by doing a simple basic thing of wearing the same uniform alike how anyone could expect them to fight and win a nation’s battle. This is why the army has proved a guideline of regulations for soldiers in the United States Army to wear and abide by. This regulation is army regulation six hundred dash one which covers the dress and appearance of army uniforms in any given situation.

Personal Appearance Regarding Personnel Currently Serving in the United States Army. As stated in AR 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, paragraph 1-7 A, “General. The Army is a uniformed service where discipline is judged, in part, by the manner in which a soldier wears a prescribed uniform, as well as by the individual’s personal appearance. Therefore, a neat and well-groomed appearance by all soldiers is fundamental to the Army and contributes to building the pride and esprit essential to an effective military force.

A vital ingredient of the Army’s strength and military effectiveness is the pride and self-discipline that American soldiers bring to their Service through a conservative military image. It is the responsibility of commanders to ensure that military personnel under their command present a neat and soldierly appearance. Therefore, in the absence of specific procedures or guidelines, commanders must determine a soldier’s compliance with standards in this regulation. Soldiers must take pride in their appearance at all times, in or out of uniform, on and off duty.

This regulation prescribes the authorization for wear, composition, and classification of uniforms, and the occasions for wearing all personal, (clothing bag issue), optional, and commonly worn organizational Army uniforms. It also prescribes the awards, insignia, and accouterments authorized for wear on the uniform, and how these items are worn. General information is also provided on the authorized material, design, and uniform quality control system. Regulation it states that the United States Army is a uniformed service that is judged, in part, by the way a soldier wears their uniform.

This being said, if a soldier wears their uniform in a manner which is not clean and neat in appearance, and portrays the army poorly, the members of the United States Army would be viewed in a poor and undisciplined manner. Whereas if the members of the United States Army hold themselves to a higher standard, and maintain a neat and clean appearance, the members of the uniformed service will be viewed by the outside world as an organization which personifies what discipline is supposed to be.

While we are on the subject of discipline, I think it would be good to explore it and it’s relation to the importance of Army Regulation 670-1. Discipline is one of the cornerstones of the United States Army. With the research that I did in this assay I was able to understand more of the importance of my uniform. I also learn in a way how we set our self’s apart from the civilian world and how they use there uniforms. I also learn of ways to portrait myself better when in uniformed.
