Law Enforcement Employees And Their Involvement With Domestic Violence

To ensure that a serene and peaceful coexistence is present in families’ setup, the law enforcement agencies are empowered by law to check against issues of domestic violence. A law enforcement officer or employee who engages in domestic violence in his or her family is most likely to perform poorly in his official responsibility. Furthermore, the public tend to lose its confidence and trust in law enforcement agencies as the incidence of battering and domestic violence keeps on increasing among the ranks of the law enforcement agents.

It thus, becomes a tasking job for the recruiters of law enforcement officers to have a proactive measures put in place that will check the psychological soundness of those they employ to safeguard and protect the masses interest and wellbeing. In this view, Davis (2005) argues that, the “Reactive intervention (after a crisis occurs) by law enforcement, psychologists, and domestic violence advocates must become more proactive.

Punitive policies and programs alone need to be evaluated for their effectiveness”. Proactive measures here entails that an a priori assessment need to be conducted to prevented law enforcement agents from being a perpetuators of domestic violence. This is a task that can is done through examination and testing to recruit applicants with good degrees and sound psychological acumen, and the trace of absence of previous battering or public assaults to those close to them or those they interact with.

Cases of law enforcement agents involving in domestic violence abound and each passing day they are increasing and flooding the pages of print media. A New York court held in Bonsignore v City of New York, had a case where an officer shot his wife and then killed himself. In addition, the case of Davis v Hennepin County is one that a woman charged that a county corrections officer repeatedly engaged in a pattern of harassment towards her (ibid). However, the complainant lost the case to the plaintiff; such cases are becoming a daily occurrence.

The identified problem underlying this research study then has to do with how effectively can a proactive measure be taken to check against law enforcement agents becoming a nuisance to their immediate family and a problem to the task they are original meant to take control of. The increasing rate of this incidence and the declining rate of confidence ad trust in law enforcement officers calls for a massive concern for the subject of this research. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
