Water bodies can also be affected by the actions taken in response to an oil spill. Oil dispersant chemicals have been particularly controversial. Corexit, which was used during the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the Deepwater Horizon spill, is a dispersant toxic to human and sea life

Oil in oil spill are much less dense than water. Because of this, oil sits on top of the oceans where many animals live and birds go through to get their fish. When birds touch the water to get their food, the oil gets stuck to their feathers and makes so they are unable to fly and stay warm, causing many birds to die of hypothermia and to drown.2. Oil spills are huge problems to the environment.

The obvious one is that the oil and slick can harm marine life as well as birds who simply land to get their food. This causes death to animals, dirtying our waters, ruining the eco system, and ruining some of the food chain. The oil spills, if they reach land, can get into the wildlife and plants of the region. If the plants get oil into their roots they will die. Oil spills pose a great threat to wildlife, people, economy, and plants as well. We have to do all in our power to help animals and wildlife who have been sullied by these oil spills.3.When whales, Dolphins and porpoises surface to breathe, oily water can cover their blowholes and enter their lungs making breathing difficult.

Oil can get into the animals’ eyes, potentially causing damage to vision.Seabird gets covered with oil while diving into oily waters to fish. The birds may ingest oil when they eat prey that is covered in or has ingested oil. Once birds are covered with oil, they have difficulty flying, or are completely unable to fly, making feeding and getting away from predators impossible.4. First, the air pollution issue.

I would say there is an impact that can be identified but difficult to assess. There is a release of natural gas into the atmosphere which is a greenhouse gas. Much of the oil spill is evaporating on the ocean surface, releasing more greenhouse gases. BP has received permission to burn the large volumes of oil it is capturing offshore, which will pollute the atmosphere, and release greenhouse gases.

Burning is not preferred, but is considered the safer option than bringing in more boats to unload the oil. Now the water pollution issue. For the oil spill to extend beyond the gulf, it must be able to flow out of the Gulf and cause harm in the Atlantic. This is a very difficult to show at present and may become a rather contentious issue. The southern edge of the spill is becoming more fragmented, and difficult to track. So far, the modeling efforts show none of the oil will escape enter the Atlantic through the loop current, but their forecasts are only two days in the future.

5. Fisherman lose their job for possible extended periods of time due to government bans and restrictions on fishing which could be extended for large periods of time until the oil spill is stopped and the clean-up of all oil pollution is completed. | Thesis Statement| Oil spill in water bodies is very dangerous to sea creatures and other animals. We need to avoid oil spill so that sea animals will not die and Fisherman do not affect or lose their jobs, even us people can affect this oil spill and might cause different effects in our body.|

The Effect of Oil Spills on Water Bodies By Scott Johnson, eHow Contributor

Oil spills from offshore drilling can pollute water bodies and destroy wildlife populations. The consequences of an oil spill on a body of water depend on the nature of the spill location, including weather, water currents, wildlife and human uses of the body of water. Wildlife considerations also include migration and breeding activities at the time of the spill and after. The type of oil also makes a difference. While crude oil sticks to fur and feathers of wildlife, refined oil is dangerous due to its toxicity. Other People Are Reading

Action of Oil in Water * A single gallon of oil can result in an oil slick of up to 100 square meters. Large oil spills such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 can result in hundreds of square miles of surface contamination, extensive pollution of coastal areas and estuaries and residual oil on the ocean floor for an extended period after the spill. As oil mixes with water, it forms a sticky substance called "mousse." Effects on Wildlife

* Oil spills can be extremely damaging to wildlife populations. Oil destroys the insulating properties of feathers and fur. When animals and birds become coated in oil, they often become susceptible to hypothermia. Many birds also become unable to float, and drown as a result. Oil that is ingested can sicken or kill an animal. As the oil remains in the local ecosystem, it bioaccumulates in food chains, disrupting reproductive cycles and resuting in greater incidence of illness. Oil also destroys marine plant life and coral reefs, reducing habitat for all creatures. * Sponsored Links

Many coastal communities rely on fishing and tourism for a large proportion of local economic activity. Oil spills can destroy local fisheries and severely diminish tourist traffic. Oil and other chemicals can remain in the local environment for many years, migrating gradually into local estuaries and deltas. The result is a more toxic environment for people, with related risks to public health. Use of Dispersants

* Water bodies can also be affected by the actions taken in response to an oil spill. Oil dispersant chemicals have been particularly controversial. Corexit, which was used during the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the Deepwater Horizon spill, is a dispersant toxic to human and sea life. Toxicology studies have determined that Corexit can rupture red blood cells, and cause internal bleeding and organ damage. Because of the volumes of dispersant used to treat large spills, the chemicals will remain in the marine environment for many years, with unknown consequences.

III. PRELIMINARY THESIS STATEMENT: To be able to avoid Oil spills we need to be careful and we have to know the safety of our environments. We can prevent it in many ways like checking the ship before shipping, and be careful and safely. Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker (a ship that carries oil from one country or place to another) to leak oil into the ocean. Or, when countries are at war, one may decide to dump gallons of oil into the other country’s oceans.
