Why Guns Should Not Be Banned

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arm, shall not be infringed.” The United States constitution states it itself. It protects the rights of people to keep and bear arms. To ban guns will be violating the constitution. If a citizen in a state feels unsafe in their environment they have a right to own a gun for safety reasoning. If a state government takes that away from the citizen, their safety becomes a hazard for self-protection and more crimes would be committed.

Most people think that banning guns will decrease crime rate. Crime will not go down by banning guns since the majority of criminals have unregistered guns. Unfortunately, if the government was to ban all guns, this will increase crime rate instead of decreasing it. No gun restrictions are going to stop a criminal for committing a crime. Criminals are never going to turn in their guns and won’t hesitate to use them. A study conducted by The Department of justice says that guns are used 1 to 1.5 million times a year, to prevent a crime from happening.

On the other hand, gun is actually a useful tool in protecting yourself. Guns may be used to harm thousands of people each year. But I have failed to agree that more guns equal more crimes and fewer guns equal fewer crimes. In fact, research would suggest the exact opposite. If the governor ban guns, that will not stop people from killing. It’s not the gun that kills people. It’s the people that kill people. The crime rate has increased over the past 20 years, and is showing no signs of decreasing. In the next 5 to 10 years crime will continue to rise due to the bad economy and people losing their job.

Nevertheless, guns are just one of many devices people use to kill. How about all the other devices like knives, ropes, baseball bats, vehicles, and airplanes to name a few, why not ban all of them since they kill people as well. Besides, gaining control of illegal gun seems impossible for law enforcement. Yes, in a perfect world police would be around to prevent all crimes. But that theory is unrealistic because it is impossible to believe that the police can be at every crime in every place. Banning guns might make investigation after a crime has been committed easier, it would be better to allow guns and stop the crime before it happens.

This country has agreed that civilians can own guns to protect what they think are right. The constitution gives the people the right to bare arms and protect themselves. Banning guns should be considered unconstitutional because it goes against the right to bare arms. If the common people have no guns, the only group who will have guns will be the criminals and law enforcement so who is going to protect you from the criminals when law enforcement cannot come that instant. This is why banning guns is not a good idea.
