Gun Control Essay Example

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. ” The second ammendment uses the word “militia” which is not a fighting army, but is made up of fighting citizens in small groups. The Bill of Rights refers to the individual rights of Americans and doesn’t disclude the second amendement. Our founding fathers composed this amendment to protect our rights as Americans and our sovernty as a nation.

The concept of private ownership of firearms is being questioned due to certain recent criminal activity. One founding father, Thomas Jefferson, siad, “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in goverment. ” An uproar has come about demanding the illigalization of certain firearms, and the goverment has thoroughly supported it. However, many have decided this to be a shout from the ignorant.

Some think prohibition of certain firearms can be our savior from violence, but contrary to their intentions, it will plunge us into an ironic frenzy for firearms. For centuries, humans have had access to weapons, they haven’t all used them in acts of violence. Society has come to think that if one owns a gun, it makes them a bad and dangerous person. In reality, people all over the world still own and use guns so that they can do basic and neccessary activities such as hunting for food.

Before we had guns, people commited violent crimes using knives, rope, arrows, and many other weapons, as they still do today. Violence still happens without firearms. The majority of gun owners in the United States keep weapons for self protection, recreational hunting or targeting, and collecting. Recently, the attitude of many is that the guns themselves kill people. People kill people and currently most, if not all, suffer from mental illness. Most gun owners hold registration for their gun and a gun permit. Gun handling and safety classes are available and many people take advantage of them.

Most of those who own guns are safe and law abiding citizens and know how to use their weapons safely. The goverment is slowly trying to outlaw cerain types of guns. Certain firearms aren’t reasonable to own for the general public, but everyone has a right to own them. Outlawing guns will only send citizens tot he black market to purchase. Starting by taking away high power weapons, the goverment can continue to say that each grade of weaponry is dangerous, giving reason to take each away until we are left with nothing.

George Washington once said, “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good. ” Making gun possession laws more strict will only do more harm than good, and all gun owners can see this. The loss of personal protection will bring crime rate up as innocent citizens will no longer be able to defend themselves. It is our right as Americans to hold, carry, and use a gun when necessary, and taking this right away is to disintegrate the United States constitution.
