Group working skills

IntroductionThere will be a group working in many areas and in lots of situations. Particularly, in the university the group working may be the section of the student’s task. And in the company the group working should be needed in many aspects, such as the sales group, the marketing group, the production of development group and so on. In this essay, I will discuss the definition of group dynamics, the group’s factors which involve norms, roles, cohesiveness and the development stages of group. And then I will explain these factors use my own experiences. GROUP DYNAMICS

Before describing the group dynamics I would like to describe my group. We are a band and there are four members that are guitar player, drum player, bass player and a singer. Payne and Whitaker, (2000) say, ‘group dynamics is the named given to the way that a group deals with the factors that affect it from within itself.’ There are some major factors which involve norms, roles, cohesiveness and the development stages of group. There is a great relationship in our band, and we also have a nice communication between us. There are also some other reasons to prove our group has a good relationship among us in the following contents. NORMS

There are different norms in the various groups. As Payne and Whitaker say, ‘Norms always develop in groups and will control or inhibit the behaviour of individual members in a particular set of circumstances.’ (Payne and Whitaker, 2000: 61)In our group, there is no smoking when we practice the performance. Everyone’s mobile phone should be turned off or kept silence. We cannot play other performance when we prepare the new performance. We cannot speak to each other when the leader speaks. These norms ensure we can have a peaceful condition in our group and ensure we have a great relationship between us. ROLES

Everyone should have their own roles in the group. Payne and Whitaker (2000) claim roles can be classified into three categories which involve group task roles, group maintenance roles and self-seeking roles. In our team, I play the ideas generator role, because I often think lots of new ideas. I remembered that we should show a performance to celebrate our teacher’s birthday.

I came up with a new idea which is we write a song to give our teacher by ourselves. Our leader plays the coordinator role, because he often gathers everyone’s ideas and views and he coordinate the different activities of our team. COHESIVENESS

There is the cohesiveness in our group. Payne and Whitaker (2000) claim cohesiveness can ensure members have the same goals and want to stay with together and Payne and Whitaker say, ‘cohesiveness is a product of interactions.’ (Payne and Whitaker, 2000: 65) More communication ensures we reach objectives more efficiently. Here is an example, there was a competition, and our goal is to get the champion. During the practice we have lots of communications between each other and we know everyone’ drawbacks and we in terms of these drawbacks to adjust ourselves. At last we overcome our disadvantages and we achieve our goals. DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES OF GROUPS

Payne and Whitaker (2000) claim every group has different situation so the group has the various stages. These stages are getting to know you, gaining power and influence, development of unity and achieving the task. As Payne and Whitaker say, ‘in the stage 4 the group feels a high group moral and an intense group loyalty and commitment.’ (Payne and Whitaker, 2000: 70) I think our band arrived at the stage 4 which is achieving the task, because our band accomplished lots of shows and every member in our band has high trust and great know each other. There is camaraderie in our band and our group becomes creative.

CONCLUSIONThroughout analyzing and my own experience I think that some common factors of the group such as norms and roles are very important for the group as well as some other factors which are goals and cohesiveness. I provide some examples from my own experience of a band to understand these points. The individual’s success cannot stand for the group’s success; however the group’s success can represent each member’s success. Now I can well know my role in the band and I will understand our band clearer than previously.
