Group B Assignment II

“Chak De India” : the different stages of group development; group dynamics; and leadership. GROUP DEVELOPMENT THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING GROUPS DEPENDS SIGNIFICANTLY ON THE TYPE OF GROUP AND THE SPECIFIC PURPOSES TO BE ACHIEVED. THE VARIOUS MODELS OF GROUP DEVELOPMENT ARE (ZASTROW 2009): 1. SEQUENTIAL STAGE MODEL THE GARLAND, JONES, AND KOLODNY MODEL

TUCKMAN MODEL

THE NORTHERN AND KURLAND MODEL

2. RECURRING-PHASE MODEL THE BALES MODEL

FOR THE MOVIE “CHAK DE INDIA” NONE OF THE SEQUENTIAL STAGE MODELS SUIT COMPLETELY. IT IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RECURRING-PHASE MODEL SINCE ALL THE ISSUES OF A PARTICULAR STAGE ARE NEVER COMPLETELY RESOLVE AND TEND TO RECUR LATER. HOWEVER, WE SHALL GIVE EXCERPTS FROM THE MOVIE FOR VARIOUS STAGES OF GROUP DEVELOPMENT THROUGH TUCKMAN MODEL: 1. FORMING MEMBERS BECOME ORIENTED TOWARDS EACH OTHER AND TRY TO DETERMINE THEIR PLACE IN THE TEAM. SELECTION OF 16 GIRLS FROM THE WHOLE COUNTRY FOR INDIAN NATIONAL WOMEN HOCKEY TEAM

PLAYERS BELONG TO DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES AND SKILLS.

COACH KABIR KHAN LAID RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE TEAM.

PREETI SABARWAL AS CENTRE FORWARD, KOMAL CHAUTALA AT RIGHT WING AND BINDIA NAIK AT CENTRE HALF; SIMILARLY EVERY PLAYER WAS

ALLOTTED ITS POSITION. 2. STORMING THE STAGE INCLUDES RAISE OF CONFLICTS BETWEEN VARIOUS GROUP MEMBERS AND PROCEDURES AND MANAGEMENT OF THE SAME. ARGUMENT BETWEEN BALBIR AND SOIMOI AS SOIMOI DIDN’T KNOW PUNJABI LANGUAGE.

SENIOR PLAYERS DISCARDED THE ORDER OF ALLOTMENT OF BEDS.

EVERY MORNING 4 KM JOGGING AND THE RIGOROUS PRACTICE ALL DAY LONG.

BINDIA NAIK ADAMANT ON PLAYING IN THE FORWARD LINE.

UNHEALTHY COMPETITIVE ATTITUDE OF KOMAL CHAUTALA TOWARDS PREETI SABARWAL.

QUARREL BETWEEN MOLLY AND ALIYA IN THE FIELD.

COACH GIVING NEGATIVE REMARK ON EVERY PLAYER AND COMMENTING HARSHLY ON THEIR PLAY.

TEAM DENIAL TO PRACTICE WITH THE COACH KABIR KHAN AS HE WAS TOO STRICT.

3. NORMING ESTABLISHMENT OF MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND COHESIVENESS BETWEEN THE GROUP MEMBERS AND HENCE THEY GEAR UP TO WORK TOWARDS THE SAME GOAL. PLAYERS ASKING SORRY FOR THEIR MISTAKE TO THE CONCERNED PLAYER OR THE COACH AND GEARING UP FOR PLAYING WITH EACH OTHER.

AFTER RIGOROUS PRACTICE, PLAYERS TURN AGAINST THE COACH HOWEVER, THEY GOT CLOSE TO EACH OTHER; STARTED HELPING EACH OTHER, FOR

EXAMPLE, BALBIR TOLD SOIMOI, WHO HAD AN ARGUMENT EARLIER, NOT TO WORRY AND THAT SHE WILL TEACH HER HINDI. THE FIGHT BETWEEN THE GIRLS AND BOYS WHEN COACH TOOK THE WHOLE TEAM FOR LUNCH.

4. PERFORMING THE GROUP MORALE IS HIGH AND EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS HER OWN TASK AND IS GOAL-ORIENTED, IN SHORT, THE GROUP IS NOW READY TO WORK TOWARDS ACHIEVING THE GOALS. THE TEAM UNITES TO PLAY AGAINST THE BOYS’ HOCKEY TEAM FOR THE SAKE OF PLAYING AT THE WORLD CUP.

THE TEAM AFTER FIGHTING ALL THE ODDS PLAYS IN THE WORLD CUP AS A TEAM AND GOES ON TO WIN IT.

5. ADJOURNING THIS STAGE DESCRIBES THE DISENGAGEMENT OF THE GROUP AFTER THE TASK IS COMPLETED OR THE GOAL IS ACHIEVED BY THE GROUP. HOWEVER, IN THIS MOVIE, THERE IS NO DISBANDMENT OF THE GROUP AND THE MOVIE ENDS. REFERENCE :

ZASTROW, CHARLES. SOCIAL WORK WITH GROUPS; CENGAGE LEARNING Group Dynamics WHEN WE CONSIDER THE DYNAMISM IN THE INDIAN WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM IN THE FILM CHAK DE INDIA, BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE DYNAMISM ARE APPARENT IN THE TEAM. THE TEAM AS A GROUP UNDERGOES CERTAIN OBSTACLES AS WELL AS IMPULSE IN BUILDING UP RELATIONS AMONGST THE TEAM. THEREFORE, LIKE EVERY OTHER HUMAN GROUPS THIS TEAM AS A GROUP ALWAYS WAS ON A DYNAMIC STATE. THE FOLLOWINGS ARE THE DIFFERENT DYNAMISM EVIDENT WITHIN THE TEAM: BONDING: IT IS EVIDENT THAT, WHEN THE GROUP FIRST COMES TOGETHER, SINCE THE TEAM WAS A BLEND OF DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS WE SEE

THE SENSE OF INDIFFERENCE WITH EACH OTHER. HOWEVER, GRADUALLY THE TEAM DEVELOPED THE SPIRIT OF BELONGINGNESS AND ONENESS. AND THIS FORCE PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE GROUP. THIS SENSE OF BONDING OR TIES WAS FIRST MANIFESTED IN THE SCENE OF THE RESTAURANT WHERE THE TEAM UNANIMOUSLY FOUGHT AGAINST THE PEOPLE WHO HARASS THEM. THEN AND THERE THE COACH RIGHTLY REMARKED, “IT IS NOT STRENGTH BUT THE SPIRIT MAKES A TEAM”. SIMILARLY MULTIPLES INSTANCES WERE EVIDENT IN THE MOVIE WHERE THIS SPIRIT WAS

MANIFESTED. AND IT IS WITH THIS SPIRIT THAT THE TEAM BECAME THE WORLD’S WOMEN HOCKEY CHAMPION. THIS SPIRIT OF TEAM OR GROUP IS AN INEVITABLE COMPONENT OF ANY GROUP. WITHOUT THIS NO GROUP CAN FUNCTION NOR CAN EXIST.

FORMATION OF SUB-GROUPS: IT IS VERY NATURAL FOR EVERY GROUP FOR THE EXISTENCE OF SUB-GROUPS WITHIN THE GROUP. HENCE A GROUP

SHOULD EMOTIONALLY ACCEPT THIS AND WORK WITH THEM RATHER THAN AGAINST THEM. SIMILARLY HERE IN THE INDIAN WOMEN’S HOCKEY

TEAM THERE WAS AN EXISTENCE OF SUBGROUPS WITHIN THE TEAM. NEVERTHELESS, THE TEAM ACCEPTS IT AND WORK WITH THEM RATHER AGAINST THEM. FORMATION OF SUBGROUPS CAN BE A POSITIVE SUBGROUPS AS WELL AS NEGATIVE SUBGROUPS. SOME OF THE VISIBLE SUBGROUPS IN THE TEAM INDIA ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. TRIADS: BINDIA NAIK, ALIYA BOSE AND GUNJAN LAKHANI

2. DYAD: SOIMOI KERKETA & RANI DISPOTTA AND MOLLY ZIMIK & MARY RALTE

3. MONADS: PREETI SABARWAL

4. ISOLATE: BINDIA NAIK

LEADERSHIP LEADERSHIP IS AN INHERENT QUALITY OF A GROUP SITUATION. THEREFORE, A LEADER IS AN INEVITABLE COMPONENT OF A GROUP. IN A GROUP THE SENSE OF LEADER COMES BY INSTINCT. DISPLAY OF LEADERSHIP QUALITY BY THE GROUP MEMBERS OFTEN TAKES PLACE AS SITUATION DEMANDS. AND A NEED FOR LEADER WHO WOULD GUIDE AND LEAD THE GROUP DEVELOPED AS THE GROUP PASS THROUGH DIFFERENT PHASES OF THEIR EXISTENCE.

SIMILARLY, WITHIN THE TEAM INDIA MEMBERS DISPLAY LEADERSHIP SENSE AT DIFFERENT SITUATION. FOR INSTANCES, BINDIA NAIK INITIATES THE IDEA OF GIVING AN APPLICATION SAYING THEY DON’T WANT COACH KABIR KHAN TO BE THEIR COACH AND VIDYA SHARMA THE GOAL KEEPER TAKING THE INITIATIVE OF DISCLOSING THEIR DECISION BY SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION. MOREOVER, A SITUATION COMES WHERE THE TEAM INDIA NEEDS A LEADER. THEREFORE, AFTER MUCH ANALYSIS AND CONSIDERATION THE COACH KABIR KHAN APPOINTED VIDYA SHARMA TO BE THE LEADER OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM. CONFLICTS

IT IS OFTEN DESCRIBED THAT A GROUP IS NO LESS THAN DEAD IF THERE IS NO CONFLICT WITHIN THE GROUP. HENCE WITHIN THE TEAM INDIA IT OCCUR NUMEROUS CONFLICTS IN THE PROCESS. SOME OF THE CONFLICTS WERE; CONFLICTS OF WANTING TO PLAY IN THE POSITION IN WHICH EACH ONE OF THEM HAD PLAYED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE STATE,

BINDIA NAIK WANTING TO BE THE CAPTAIN

PREETI SABARWAL AND KOMAL CHAUTALA COMPETING FOR MORE GOALS

BALBIR KAUR AND SOIMOI AS SOIMOI DID NOT KNOW PUNJABI LANGUAGE

DISAGREEMENT WITH THE ARRANGEMENT OF BEDS IN THE DORMITORY, ETC.
