A team is defined as “a group of people brought together to use their complementary skills to achieve a common purpose for which they are collectively accountable” (Schermerhorn, 2010). The case The Forgotten Group Member shows the reader how teams fall apart due to a lack of communication. This case proves that knowing how to lead a team is just as important as being a part of the team. It is important to realize that not only does a leader have responsibility to a team but the members have to be involved in order for a project to be completed accurately and affectively. Part I: Group Development
After reviewing the case and textbook material, the group is now in the storming stage. “The storming stage of team development is a period of high emotionality and tension among the group members. During this stage, hostility and infighting may occur, and the team typically experiences many changes” (Schermerhorn, 2010).
The hostility and fighting in this case came from Mike and how he felt that the group excluded him from meetings when in actuality that wasn’t the case. From the case one could see that if Mike would participate in the workload that he could be a viable part of the group. Mike hasn’t performed to the caliber as the other group members because of personal situations. Part II: Problem Identification
As a third party, one can see the many problems that were associated with the information provided from the case. The main primary problem is the lack of communication between the leader of the group, Christine, and Mike. It is evident that Mike feels that he is being left out of important decisions being made.
From the information provided Mike isn’t actively participating in group meetings or group assignments. It is important as the team leader for Christine to go above and beyond in regards to Mike becoming a more active member of the group. As a team leader, one has to develop personal relationships with each team member to understand how they will operate in a team setting. Obviously Mike needs a little extra attention to become more involved in the group. T
he secondary issue here is that Christine needs to be the leader; she needs to voice her opinion about what Mike isn’t doing and about what he should be doing. In any group it is imperative that the leader takes charge at the beginning of the project. In taking charge, one has to come up with solutions when problems start to arise. The leader can’t wait until the project is almost due to try to take control of the situation. Part III:
From the weekly discussions in class and from the text book it is obvious that Christine should form a course of action. The first course of action is for Christine to try to handle the problem herself as the team leader. Mike has continued to come up with excuses for not meeting with the group. With this being the case, it is imperative that Christine try different avenues to complete the assignment. The first thing she should do is work with Mike’s schedule to try and meet with him along with the group to voice her concerns. The important key here is to work around his schedule so he can’t say that he wasn’t consulted in regards to a time for the group meeting.
In being accommodating, Christine is trying to show her more personal side in dealing with Mike and his personal issues. If this course of action isn’t satisfactory for him, then next best step for Christine is to take the issue to the professor. If Christine has been an effective team leader she should be documenting what each team member has and hasn’t done.
By doing this she is providing accurate proof to the professor about the issue that has arisen in the group. When Christine goes to the professor she should be able to provide evidence that she tried to work with Mike and that in trying she did her part as the group leader. Part IV: Reflection
In reflecting on this case, it is obvious that Christine wasn’t a good group leader. In trying to keep peace, it seems as if she didn’t want a confrontation with Mike but there are times when as the leader one has deal with the issues that come about. Christine seemed to be a more effective leader when everything seemed to be going in a smooth matter. A leader needs to be able to handle all types of situations that are presented within a group setting. An effective leader is one that can communicate and delegate task that allows for the team to complete projects in a timely manner.
