*26.04.1564 (baptised) in Stratford-upon-Avon† 23.04.1616 in Stratford-upon-Avon- English poet and playwright- actual date of birth remains unknown, but is traditionally observed on 23. April – Father: John Shakespeare: considered farmer and merchant-> 1565: alderman- Mother: Mary Arden of Wilmcote: daughter of an affluent landowning farmer – was probably educated at the King’s New School in Stratford

– 1582, at the age of 18, he married the 26-year old Anne Hathaway – six months later: Anne gave birth to a daughter, named Susanna (baptised: 26.05.1583) – 1585: Twins were born: son Hamnet and daughter Judith (baptised: 02.02.1585) -> Hamnet died of unknown causes at the age of 11 and was buried 11.08.1596 – after birth of the twins Shakespeare -> only some information -> Shakespeare’s „lost years“ between 1585 and 1592 – 1592: Part of the London theatre scene -> several of his plays were on the London stage by 1592 ->

Shakespeare was well known – from 1594: Shakespeare’s plays were performed by only the “Lord Chamberlain’s Man” -> Group of players including Shakespeare, became the leading playing company in London – 1603: Queen Elizabeth died -> company was awarded by the new king and changed its name to “the Kings Men” – 1603 – 1610: no acting work during the extended outbreaks of the plague – 1616: Shakespeare died at the age of 52 in Stratford

-> died of unknown causes- widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language – called England’s National Poet / “Bard of Avon”- His works: 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems – produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613-> early plays: comedies and histories-> then: tragedies until 1608 (Hamlet, King Lear, Othello and Macbeth)
