The criminal justice system has three components, which are law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Each of them plays a major role in the criminal justice system. The United States has the most documented incarceration rate in the world. By the end of 2009, 743 adults per 100,000 populations, which is incarcerated. Crime has decreased since 1993, but there is still an increase on the incarceration rate in the United States. The correctional population has doubled because of the sentencing guidelines and the drug has sent many Americans to prison.
In 2008, 7. 3 million people were on probation, jail or prison, or on parole. Criminal Justice Trends In the criminal justice system there are many trends. Many of the issues and controversy of the corrections part of the criminal justice has been accumulated over centuries. People will learn and comprehend that the criminal justice is improving and developing different ways to keep improving. In this paper an evaluation will be conducted on the past, present, and the futures of corrections.
It will also mention the budgetary and managerial, in which the future trends will likely have not only on corrections but also on the criminal justice system as a whole. It will include the ways the corrections system is developing within different trends as well. In 1870, leaders in American corrections, met with people from Cincinnati, Ohio, first developed principles stating the beliefs and values underlying the practice of his or her profession (Nolin, 2005). The National Prison Association was founded as a result of this meeting (American Correctional, 2001).
This organization evolved into the American Correctional Association. As member corrections the role is to assist in the prevention and control of delinquency and crime, but this also depends on the prevention of criminal and delinquent behavior and the constructive qualities of society and its basic entities: family, community, school, religion, and government (American Correctional, 2001). In the past many of the conditions of the corrections facilities were very inhumane. Many of the inmates were left to starve, and the trends of punishment were physical.
Many of the prisoners were hanged, beheaded, tortured, or even mutilated. In England these kinds of punishment was taken place, and this had an effect on the American predecessors at the time. One of the past trends for corrections was solitary confinement, in which there was little concern for rehabilitation for any of the inmates. The inmate’s well-being was not the greatest concern in the past. Many people wanted the criminals to be punished for his or her crime that were committed. It was the societal views on the criminal behaviors and crimes that shaped the structuring of the stricter sentencing over rehabilitation.
In the past one-hundred years, technology in policing, communication, and other disciplines have experienced many numerous advances. In the early years of correction facilities, prisons, and jails were made out of bricks, mortar, and steel. They called these cell-blocks or cell houses. The earliest technology trend found in these facilities were the hand operated locks and keys, hard-wire radios or communication devices, lethal weapons, non-lethal weapons or compliance tools, and transportation.
There were people designing and implementing new technologies for the prisons and jails, which gave the law enforcement the upper hand in correctional management. All the technologies were embraced by the corrections field, and they have had great success from the instillations. In corrections today probation is an alternative to incarceration, in which in some cases could be combined with being incarcerated and a period of obtaining community supervision. Focusing on parole and probation this will be more effective for prisons and jails and also for the serious crimes and offenders.
Over that past 40 years the jail and prison population has exploded and caused a trend in sentencing. With the facilities being overcrowded they have more residents than the standard beds that they have in the facilities. The large growth in the prison population has made it a great increase in the prison expenditures. The spending for the corrections will soon pass the amount of money people are taking for loans to attend school with. As the expenditure continues to increase, the government, and the administrators should be searching for new ways to limit all this spending.
In the community corrections the primary goal is to make sure that people are safe through the reduced recidivism. Collaboration with the institutions partners is also important as well. The line between institutional and community-based treatment should be releasing offenders on furloughs and educational levels and develop halfway houses so that they are supervise, in which this could save tax dollars in the future (Collaborative Justice, 2013). Collaboration offers additional benefits to the community corrections officials, including a more efficient way to use the resources given to them.
Where effective collaborations are in place, the corrections staff can receive the information they need to supervise their inmates and take advantage of the resources available to them (Collaborative Justice, 2013). Community corrections agencies that have worked together with collaborative partnerships report a better job satisfaction and increased capacity among community corrections professionals. However, collaboration is a necessary for community corrections to promote public safety effectively.
The correctional institutions depend on the social, economic, demographic, and the political conditions. These factors will play an important role over the coming year determining the future trends in the correctional facilities. The state fiscal crisis places a burden on correctional administrators as they seek way to make sure their prisons run efficiently. Many of the correctional facilities are also seeking long-term changes through the legislation as well. Moreover, they also need to think of way to prepare inmates for release, as this would be a strong determinant of future recidivism rates.
In the United States today, this is the worst fiscal crisis where suffering from in years. The revenue is declining and in return forcing all government functions, such as the corrections funding to be cut. Many of the state corrections departments all over are trying to save now. Many of the correctional facilities has reduced their staff, reduced salaries, and not giving pay increases because of the lack of funding. Other correctional facilities are consolidating or halting their planned expansion because of the lack of funding. The impact that the lack f funding with have on the corrections depends on the state. The prison population is creating issues for the state and federal government. The larger share of the tax dollars are spent on the correctional facilities. The spending has continued to rise even though the crime rate has been stable since the early 1990s. The managerial impact in the correction facilities play a big role in making sure that staff, and the inmates are safe. The administrator is the one who will implement the policies and rules that must be followed in case of any incidents occurring while on duty.
Health care is also an important part of the correctional management’s duties. This has also been a controversy and also poses too many issues. The administrator is in charge of making sure that all offenders receive the proper medical treatment needed for his or her health. Rehabilitation is also an important subject for the correctional management as well. There are many programs in the United States, to help inmates establish some kind of rehabilitation, for the inmates in the prison they should be taken advantage of the program presented to them.
This eventually will help them to get ready to live out in society as normal human beings. The correctional facilities include a wide range of state and federal prisons, jails, and juvenile detention centers. There have been many trends throughout the years that still exist today. The issues within the correction facilities, such as health care, over crowdedness, and funding plays a majors role in the facilities that are managed. There also technology trend that also play a major part in the correctional facilities. With technology getting better this help society get better as a whole.
The prison health care provides opportunity for inmates to receive medical care needed so that he or she can maintain good health while imprisoned. I think that everyone needs good health care, and this should not be taken away from the inmates. Many of the inmates eventually return to their communities, and those communities can benefit directly from these disease prevention and treatment efforts. Criminal justice system the criminal justice system has been around for many years. With many changes from the past to the present, there are many more changes to make within the corrections department in the future.
