Crime in Urban America

Crime in Urban America has been around for many years, it is atrocious and there are many reasons why people commit these crimes. Crime is a big issue all around the world and while there is more production of drugs and loss of jobs, the crime rate will continue to increase day by day. While there are many motives that contribute to crime the most obvious causes would be poverty which causes the poor to adapt into a violent and aggressive behavior to which later becomes ingrained into them. The environment where a person grows up in which could consist of gangs that participate in illegal activities.

Abuse of drugs or alcohol attribute to crime because people commit abominable crimes while under the influence. The anger that an individual has within themselves leads to crimes because one may feel the need to have revenge on something or someone that has caused a problem within their life. This places society in great danger. Poverty is a reason that many people in the world turn to crime. There are many people in the world today who are left unemployed. When someone is unemployed there is no way for them to make any money otherwise leaving them to not have the things in life that they want or need.

Criminal behavior is associated strongly with income deprivation; thus the geographic concentration of poverty will cause a concentration of criminal violence in poor neighborhoods” (Roleff 30). There may not be good jobs around or available to them, in this case one will sell drugs because they thing that it is a good way to earn cash. Death also causes someone to commit crime because they might lose someone who is very special to them or who is the primary breadwinner of their family and leaves them to have no income coming into the home.

Homelessness also leads to crime because it can leave someone upset about what their social standings are in a society. “Homeless persons are pushed away from their families and damaged by their experiences, many have deep-rooted feelings of guilt and shame which continue even after they have left home” (Grimshaw). If someone comes from a poor neighborhood and they see someone who is rich or of higher standing than themselves it enrages them because they tend to want to be in the other persons spot and it will make them think that violence is the only way out. The environment of where a person was raised is another leading cause of crime.

When someone grows up in a place where they see all these bad things happening in their society it serves as a role model to them and they adapt other people’s actions. Growing up in a household where somebody does not have parents or a guardian telling them what is right from wrong leads you to do the unthinkable because they do not have any family direction showing you the right way to live life. ” One of the most important environmental factors during childhood development is that of socialization or the way a child is ‘taught’ how to act”(Chemistry Web) Lack of faith causes a person to think of violence as their only way to get attention.

When someone has no religious values, they think of all the bad things that are bothering them instead of the good that they can bring into their life. Gangs in an environment are a big cause of bringing crime to a society because they are the people who do the most outrageous crimes. They are the ones who are drug dealers, who bring graffiti into neighborhoods, and who commit drive by shootings. Individuals join these gangs to be accepted, to be honored by the people within the gang, and because they may not value themselves highly. Gang membership can give young people a sense of belonging in some shared activity.

They may think that the gang is cool. Youths may form or join a gang because people fear it. This fear can give members a feeling of power” (Gedatus 8) Many people in society today have many addictions. Those addictions consist of drugs and alcohol that can make a person under the influence a dangerous person. Many addicts turn to crime in order to buy drugs or alcohol. While under the influence, many people do not realize the things that they are doing to themselves and the danger that people in their surroundings are put in.

These are some of the main reasons we have rapist and people that get into accidents in the streets because an intoxicated person does not fully process their actions and lead them to commit outrageous crimes. Drug and alcohol abuse contribute to higher rates of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual violence. Many turn to alcohol and drugs because of the way that someone has treated them in their past that later leads them to be full of rage. Anger is someone leads to crime because a person only wants to get revenge when angry.

When someone has experienced something in their life that makes them angry they turn to crime to get that certain incident off of their mind or just to feel better about themselves. If one is abused by someone who they trusted the anger causes them to lash out and get back at the person who caused harm to them. This is why we see many murder cases because people want to get back at the person who made them feel insecure. “Anger and power are frequently found in the literature as an influencing factor in sexualized crimes such as rape and homicide” (Nelson).

Jealousy also plays a big role in murder because many murder a person who they used to be in love with or a family member who they envy. Many murder an ex-lover because they think that if they cannot be in a relationship with that person then no one can. Rage against a family member only leads to murder because someone is jealous of the other persons social standing and want what they have. With the world increasing in population, poverty, and drugs, this will give individuals more of an open opportunity to commit crimes with no sense of remorse. As a result, the crimes in Urban America would leave an area in an awful crisis.
