In this report I will be doing a PESTEL analysis on the market place for Marks and Spencer’s (M&S). I have chosen to do a PESTEL analysis on the market place of M&S because I believe that this would be the best way to make recommendations to M&S on how they can improve their company and what they can do to make sure that they are keeping up with the times. PESTEL Analysis on M&S Political Environment The environment issues are the chemical pollution that is going into the world and the air in the changing environment. This is a very important issue for M&S because their consumers are the people who trust them and want the environment safe and tidy therefore M&S has to make sure that they are doing every thing they can do to help, by making sure that they add as little as possible to the chemical pollution. Another environment issue is the landfills that are been used. The landfills has to be a big environment issues because is about the amount of waste that consumers and M&S produces from stock not selling or by consumers buying products but then throwing them away. This is a big important issue for M&S because the less waste they produce the less is going to landfill which then they are able to say that they don’t produce lots of waste, therefore it will give them an edge over their competitors. Plan A Globalisation Social The social issues are that there is a change in consumer’s tastes and lifestyle this is important for M&S because it means that M&S has to get up with consumer trends and their lifestyles. Also another social issue is that consumers are concerned about the price and the promotions that supermarkets are offering, this is also an important issue that M&S has to look at and solve because it could mean that they will be losing out on profit as consumers will be going to other supermarkets to get the same product of a cheaper price either because it’s on a promotion or because it just cheaper in general. Also another social issue the economy worsening in this current environment. This is an issue for M&S because the economy is worsening it means that more and more people don’t have to money to go out and buy the luxu9ry products that M&S offer to their consumers. There are also other social issues that M&S have to consider like the income distribution, the level of education and the mobility of population, these are also social issues that M&S have to consider however these issues aren’t as important as the other issues above.Technological There are many technological issues they are: the internet, the internet is a technological issue because as we all know we aren’t to know if the internet is going to work one minute or the next and even if it does work it could be very slow. This could be an issue for M&S because it means that people aren’t able to get on their website to shop or to find out information about the company. Online shopping is another technological issue. This is a issue because many consumers don’t like the idea of the online shopping whilst other love the idea that they can do their full shop without moving from their homes. This could be an important issue for M&S because then they can please their entire consumer by having an online option that they can chose if they would like to and having an in store option as well for the people who do like to go and have a look around the store to see what they want to buy. Self-service is becoming very popular with the people that shop in the different supermarkets. For M&S this is one of the most important technology issues because it means that they are keeping up with the other stores and with technology which can be a hard thing to do because it is always changing. The self-service machine has to be one of the most important technology issues for M&S because more and more consumers are feeling comfy using them. Some of the store now only have self-service machines instead of the tills, this is saving money as they don’t have to pay staff wages to sit there on a till anymore.Chip and pin is also another technological issue. Mobile phones Price comparison enables customers to use touch-card readers with contactless cards, or enabled phones, to pay for goods under ? 20, without the need of entering a personal identification number (PIN) number Economical There are many economical issues’ that have to be considered. One of the issues is the recession, this is an economic issue because people don’t have the money to go or to stay with their supermarkets and some consumers may have to go somewhere else for their food shopping. To M&S is has got good and bad points however they both have to be considered. The bad point of the recession is that M&S may lose consumers because consumers can’t afford the prices for the products that they produce. However a good point to the recession is that they may gain consumers, this could be because consumers will be going to M&S and buying the high quality products for a night in instead of going out to the restaurants. Also they may gain consumers because of consumers are wanting the high quality food products instead of cheap products that other supermarkets offer.Another economical issue is also waste that people produce. Waste is also an economical and an environmental issue because of how much it costs to dump the waste they people produce and because of how it is damaging our environment. Waste is an important issue that has to be considered because M&S have to make sure that the waste that they are producing is as little as possible so then they aren’t damaging the environment as much and because then they will be keeping the cost down as well. As it does cost a lot of money to waste products.M&S also have to think about what their consumers are wasting to. Another economical issue is donating unwanted food, clothes and other items to homes and charities that are in need of them. Marks and Spencer’s have this issue to consider as they do donate their unwanted food, clothes and equipment to charities like Shelter and Oxfam. M&S works with fish suppliers to source a range of wild and farmed fish, claiming they can trace all fish back to the boat or farm it came from. The retailer is working with the WWF to ensure that by 2015, all of its farmed fish will only come from the most sustainable resources possible. The retailer emphasises how it can trace its fresh meat, poultry, milk and eggs to the farms they come from to ensure standards on animal welfare, animal health, food safety and quality. M&S’ milk comes from British farms which serve their stores, with– 37 in England, 9 in Scotland, 12 in Wales and 3 in Northern Ireland. M&S’ Plan A TV channel shows videos of suppliers, such as a Berkshire dairy farmer, a North Sea Haddock fisherman and a South African fruit grower, and is just one of the ways in which the retailer looks to inform customers about its food sourcing.
