Aluminum formwork is a rapid pace construction system for forming cast in place concrete structures. Formwork the term given to either temporary or permanent molds into which concrete or similar materials are poured. In the context of concrete construction, the “falsework” supports the shuttering molds. This formwork is built out of prefabricated modules with a metal frame (usually steel or aluminum) and covered on the application (concrete) side with material having the wanted surface structure (steel, aluminum, timber, etc.).
In this method, aluminum beams are created out of telescoping pieces allowing the beams to span various lengths and be reused for constructing structures of varying sizes. Aluminum formwork can also be used for scheduling and controlling the work of other construction trades such as steel reinforcement, concrete placement, and mechanical and electrical trades Forms made from aluminum are in many respects similar to those made of steel. However, because of their lower density, aluminum forms are lighter than steel Forms, and this is their primary advantage when compared to steel.
As the strength of aluminum in handling, tension and compression is less than the strength of steel, it is necessary to use large sections. The formwork turns out to be economical if large numbers of reuses are made in construction. The major disadvantage of aluminum forms is that no changes can be made once the formwork is fabricated. Aluminum formwork has advantages in the construction process. Aluminum formwork saves time, is cost effective and the quality of the construction is improve. Advantages of aluminum formwork is its environmentally friendly no need the use of plywood or timber.
The formwork supports itself in two directions for the structures lateral and vertical support so it can basically support itself. Aluminum formwork is lightweight, reusable and removable, it is resistant. Aluminum formwork is resistant to wet concrete walls, and corrosion. The form can be use over and over again in the construction phase with minimum maintenance. It is very simple to assembly therefore there is no need of skill worker. There is no need the use of tower cranes saving handling cost. The uses of aluminum formwork is very effective when working with load bearing wall construction.
Other effective uses are when working with concrete components of the building such as slabs, floors, walls, columns, staircases, balconies, beams stairs, window hoods. The aluminum formwork can be used in bay windows, straightforward panels, stairs, and air condition hoods. Since all the components are concrete it saves time; the quality and structures durability also increases. There is no need of plywood or timber in the process and eliminates internal and external plaster. It is suitable for high pressure of fresh concrete. Aluminum formwork saves cost and time in building the structure.
The assembly is simple and all parts have labels with identification of every part. The process of assembling the aluminum formwork on site is simple and unskilled labors can do it. This lowers unnecessary cost saving money. The aluminum formwork come with simple instructions. The aluminum formwork panels have labels and identification numbers allowing the workers to follow the instructions with minimal knowledge. The assembly consists of a pin and wedge system. There is no need of bracing. The parts fit together by pins and wedges which passed through holes on the outside panel walls and the only tool required is a hammer.
Other features of aluminum formwork include versatility, durability, quality, and speed. Versatility because aluminum formwork can be used in different types of structural designs. The formwork creates the building concrete forms such as the walls, columns, floor slabs, balconies, and beams. There is no need for the use of bricks, plastering or blocks. Aluminum formwork is durable and strong. The type of material that will not rust because is made of aluminum alloy and has high tensile strength. The concrete is pour monolithically making no use of construction joints because the concrete finish is smooth and there is no need of plastering.
An advantage is that all four walls of the form are cast in place and act as a rigid structure making the room walls, floor and ceiling act as one piece the quality of the formwork is accurate and can form the concrete. Aluminum formwork saves time; structures can be completed in four days per floor, and is easy to take apart and reuse. Aluminum formwork is mostly used in redevelopment projects, and residential construction housing which have a repetitive design and heavy construction. Aluminum formwork is use in different parts of the world for construction projects.
It is use in North America, Asia, Europe and other countries. Some places where aluminum formwork has being is in China, on the China National Offshore Oil Building, in Russia, the Russia Saint Petersburg Apartment buildings, in the Beijing Financial Street B7 building; these are just a few projects. 11. Conform to the Low-Carbon Economic requirements: All the materials in the formwork system are recyclable materials. Most countries have been set a rule to prohibit using wooden formworks due to environment protection. Aluminum formwork is the best substitution.
